Angry The Apple mice are pathetic.

So, instead of using a normal wheel, Apple uses a ball wheel featuring the same old technology as the ancient ball mouse. So just like those old mice, residue builds up inside the ball chamber, and the wheel stops working properly (it doesn't scroll up for example). Unlike those old mice, however, there is no way to pull the ball out and clean it.

This is in addition to the fact that it has only one button.

They call this piece of crap the Mighty Mouse, and it costs $70.

Sorry but I manage a Mac computer lab and I have to deal with this crap periodically.

Oh, I know. I concentrated on the mice, because I had to clean one a few minutes ago.

Just apply pressure back and forth on the ball for 5 minutes until the crap dislodges. Since there is no way to properly clean it, this issue is covered by the warranty (the mice here are all out of warranty though).

It is not that "there is no way to pull the ball out and clean it.". It is that there is no easy way to. . .

The mighty mouse is probably to complicated for most mac users anyway. I think they just put it out there to try to get PC users to convert.

As a regular mac user I know the Macbook Wheel is where its at.

I volunteer in the computer lab at a science museum that has 6 PCs and 6 Macs set up for visitors to use. All of the Macs are either using Logitech or Microsoft mice because the Apple mice were too flimsy to hold up against the constant and abusive use.

the macs in my web design class use to use the mighty mouse but recently switched to plain dell oem mice, I didn't mind either way personally, but the dell mice do defualt to 2 buttons, with the mighty mouse i had to keep manually setting it to 2 buttons (it never seemed to save the setting on reboot, a problem the macs seem to have in osx for everything)

Reseting to the original setting probably has more to do with the administration setup then anything else.

At my work we have a mac mini in the lab that is a multi user system and remembers everyone mouse setting just fine. I have noticed that the two other system users who are dedicated mac geeks don't use any of the mighty mouse features. They both told me they prefer the standard mouse.

"Only has one button"? Methinks maybe you should spend MORE time in the lab since there are *three* distinct buttons on the mouse. Technically, there are four, but both side buttons do the same task. It is a single piece of plastic on the top, yes, but there are "left" and "right" mouse buttons underneath. The side buttons are not normally enabled but you can set it to do things, like using for displaying the desktop.

There are times I dislike the scroll ball but the nice thing about it is that the paint doesn't wear off like my MS optical mouse or my old Logitech ones. Easiest way to clean a Mighty Mouse is use a KFC wipe and wash the ball from below to get the grime out. I've had this one for probably going on three years now with little complaint, really (my original one was a corded USB but I needed to free USB ports so I got the Bluetooth version).

Yes I know about the side buttons. But they are so inconvenient to use that any sane person chooses to ignore them.

"but the nice thing about it is that the paint doesn't wear off"

You are a walking Mac user stereotype. Sacrificing functionality for looks...

Yeah, every time I start a program like photoshop on the system it asks if you want to register and stuff, it's annoying

Paint wearing off is a rational concern/annoyance. Imho It is an extremely poor design decision to use paint on any surfaces that can not stand up to normal wear and tear.

which explains why they decided to use clear plastic on the standard mice and keyboard that after a few years dirt or something gets inside and starts making it look like s*&t. Or why ipod screens get scratched so easly that people carry them around in protective cloth ipod socks. Or why after a little use the trackball on the mighty mouse is a giant dirt magnet. Makes perfect sense to me. Clearly Apple puts a very high priority on how their products hold up to real world use.

I did not mean to imply anything other than the use of paint of surfaces that see physical wear and tear is a bad idea. I would not say apple only makes good design decisions. They, and most other tech companies, have made plenty of poor ones.

Seems you pushed the idea that there was only one button on the mouse in your original posting, leading me to believe that you clearly aren't as versed on the Mac platform as you believe yourself to be, which therefore makes you a poor candidate to discuss the merits and flaws of a system if you can't even get the *basics* right. The Mighty Mouse even *defaults* to two button operation and can be configured for three button operation rather easily.

Had you even used a Mac, or even "managed" a Mac lab as you imply, you'd know that.

I even left a DELIBERATE mistake in my response, figuring you'd pick up on it should you truly possess knowledge of the platform. There are actually *five* buttons on the mouse as the ball itself can be configured, not just the four I wrote about.

I work for at a place with well over a 100 Macs as well as Dell desktops. And what do many of these folks do?... They use Dell-branded mice for both. Mac mice sucking is nothing new either:

http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/lovemacs_2073_27981433

Seriously, wtf are they thinking?! I love my Mac and all, but if I'm not using the touchpad I'm using my Logitech G5

To Apple's credit though, the touchpads on Macbooks are frigin awesome. I love all the features it offers.

Don't worry. Apple has a new mouse coming soon that will put the smack down on all other mouses coming out soon.

Yeah, that's if all of the other mice coming out were variants of the Mighty Mouse.
