Default Hmm... has anyone needed to use an strategy guide recently?

I'm wondering if you guys have needs strategy guides recently. Is it me or have games become so simple (perhaps intuitive?) that there is almost no need for strategy guides?

The last game I needed one was on Sonic Adventure for the Dreamcast on how to raise the little guys etc.

Edit: Actually the last one I used was for RE0 on GC. There was no need for one on RE4 or RE5 for example.

I usually get the gamefaqs guides for the games I play. I want to make sure I get the most out of the game.

STALKER was the last guide that I actually bought.

I get it from GameFAQs as well. Although I downloaded a couple of online game guides for my 360 games. I use it mostly to check my progress level in the game and also if I'm really stuck somewhere. I have a excellent alternative to all of this now, YouTube. It much more convenient compared to reading through the guide.

I got the strategy guides for Oblivion and Fallout 3. I tend to play through the game once without using it, then flick through the strategy guide to see what quests I've missed, then on subsequent playthroughs tend to power level up, using hints from the guides. I figure that I've paid for the content, so I want to see it

I would have liked a strategy guide for Empire Total War, to tell me what the relevant strength and weaknesses of the units were, to build a more balanced army, but I've had to do that through trial and (lots of) error.

Never used one. Never will. Been gaming for nearly 30 years. There's much more satisfaction in figuring something out on your own than just looking up the answer.

For instance, there was one game we started playing on the Commodore 64 that we finally beat a year or two ago. Not that we played every day or anything. But every few years we'd try to figure it out. Eventually, we did. And it was well worth the wait.

I've got one for Ultima I-VI I bought about 20 years ago sitting on my shelf! The first half of the book is a 13 chapter, hilariously bad, Richard Garriot bio which was worth the price alone.

Other than that, no.

I have strategy guides I bought my wife for Zelda Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, but I think that's it. Not to say I won't use hints if I'm stuck, but mostly the Internet is my friend.

I do wonder whether we'll start to see the end of these guides, though, as most games these days make it quite clear where you're supposed to go.

Last strategy guide i used was for tomb raider 3. thats back when the prima guides were real popular and people had less time to play the games. and the internet wasnt as wide spread yet either. today you can get anything online, just go to youtube and watch someone play the entire game for you.

& then go to the thread that had a poll on if watching gameplay is illegal

I think you're just getting better at video games.

I can play older games today, that I remember having a hell of a time with, and just stream through them.

Played Dues Ex again around this time last year... and it was very easy. Much simpler than I remembered.

I think the last strategy guide I bought was back in the Playstation era.

Granted, I did use a scanned copy of the SNES Final Fantasy III guide playing through an emulator some months ago as I was probably not going to play through it twice and it was filled with all kinds of nice game art.

However, most games these days are much more explicit with challenges and % completion that let you know if you've "got everything."

I would say it's a combination of games getting easier and sites like GameFAQs. The last, and only one, I have ever used is for FF7. I was having lots of trouble defeating Hojo (I think that's his name) but then, I had a last crack at the fight before reading the guide and ended up beating him, so I just used it for chocobo breeding.

totally, when no artbooks exist, you're stuck with guides

Used it to finish off all the riddles (used it for like one or two clues) in Batman.
