Default Cities XL

I loved the orig SimCity games back in the day, so im really hoping that this can lead to the same addiction. Looks promising!

Key features of CITIES XL™ include:
  • Hundreds of buildings and monuments based on American and European-influenced architectural styles
  • Extra large and incredibly detailed 3D maps feature a variety of terrains: mountains, hills, canyons, beaches and islands, all set in different climates from tropical to desert, Mediterranean to temperate. Topography and terrain affect resource availability and city design
  • Sophisticated transport system: players can define the number and uses of traffic lanes; while using bridges and tunnels to expand the size of their cities
  • Realistic representation of the population. Citizens have a profile consisting of age, education and wealth. These profiles will affect what types of services and entertainment the player must make available to the city's inhabitants.
  • Self-sufficient global economy, balanced by price fluctuations and citizen demands throughout the game world
  • On going content production allowing player to regularly upgrade their game.
  • GEMs (Gameplay Extension Modules) allow players to switch their mayor position for CEO seats, from car dealerships to ski resorts, players will find a wide variety of businesses available to them.
  • Fantastic high-end graphics engine provides near photo-realistic quality visuals
  • Developed by the team that created the popular City Life serie
Planet offer allow users to :
  • Create interconnected cities on persistents planet, populate a world
  • Trade with each others in a global economy and specialize their cities
  • Visit each other creation, customize their avatar, chat, create their blog and social network
  • Participate in events and competitions

Played the beta and unless they add a bunch of stuff recently, it has absolutely no depth. The original Simcity seemed to be a better city simulator then Cities XL.

Hey, the game's not out yet, give them some benefit of the doubt, it might be good now, I'm having faith in this game.

No, PC has custom stuff like mouse control, text chat in game, and graphics settings.

Steam's Logic on currency: $1 =€1
The euro is just a european version of the dollar! ITS TEH SAME THING!!

I am really interested in this game. I might pick it up if there's ever a price drop on Steam.

I've always been a big fan of city simulators and I was dead set on getting this one because it looked great and like it had lots of neat features.

But now that it's out I'm hearing early reports that unless you get the "planet offer" (you pay them a monthly subscription) you won't get any of the mass transit stuff aside from buses.

I was actually considering trying their planet offer thing, if only for just a few months to see if I like it.
But I think it's kind of unreasonable to have to pay a monthly subscription just to get the features one would normally expect to be in any run of the mill city builder.
The graphics are impressive for the genre, but graphics alone don't make the game.

Looking forward to this game for a long time. The online only crap has completely shut me down.

Where do they get off charging a subscription for a CITY SIM. And then locking out features?

Who locks out features from a citysim- which, in itself is a single player genre.... (Simcity 4 tried and failed to incorporate a MP aspect.... ) but at least they didnt lock out stuff...

Value isnt added by taking things away. If they wanted to do MP they shouldve added value to things that go with having internet access... (what? thats not up to me....) no artificially restricting stuff.

Terrible.

The thing about multiplayer is, there really is no multiplayer in Cities XL. It's more like playing sim-city with multiplayer via play-by-mail.

You can spend 6 hours customizing your avatar, which only you see in a city, or a head shot representation of yourself otherwise in the game. You don't spend any time in your city, you spend it overhead, putting out fires in your town like any other sim game. But the low framerates and constant sound lags make even the sim game almost unplayable.

I say almost, since if you really want to play it you can deal with it and make some cool towns. It has tools so you can build almost anywhere, it has curves, bridges power plants and all the other tools to keep a city growing...except for public transportation...that comes with the monthly fee.

The monthly fee grants you access to more planets....and public transportation. Or is it that it's a monthly fee to have the game, and you can upgrade for more money a month to other planets and public transportation...?

IMHO the game is a pay-to-own single-player game that doesn't even work. If they could get it to work, it would probably be a pretty fun game, but still probably not enough to keep paying for. It would be a cool Sim City competitor, if it were pure single player, buy it once in a box and never pay again, except for expansion packs.

time limited demos... this one required authentication with their servers or something like that. it's a pseudo mmo style game i believe.
