$900 GeForce Titan to come late Feb? GK110 goes Consumer

Sweclockers have an intriguing new rumor about a new GPU from NVIDIA, the GeForce Titan. This card will be based on GK110 and have a TDP of 235W, offering ~85% of the performance of the GeForce GTX 690.

Multiple independent sources say the SweClockers to GK110 appears in Geforce Titan - an upcoming graphics cards in high-end class. The name alludes to the world's fastest supercomputer Cray Titan at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the USA, which is based on 18,688 pieces of Nvidia Tesla K20X with just GK110.

Calculation Card Nvidia Tesla K20X based on GK110 with 2688 CUDA cores, 384-bit memory bus, and 6 GB of GDDR5 memory. The circuit actually contains 2880 units, but NVIDIA has disabled a cluster (SMX), presumably for production reasons. While stopping the clock frequencies at relatively low 732 MHz GPU and 5.2 GHz GDDR5.

According SweClockers sources the launch of the GeForce Titanium to resemble that of the GeForce GTX 690th Partner Manufacturers must follow Nvidia's reference design to the letter and can not even put their own stickers on graphics cards. The performance is estimated at about 85 percent of a Geforce GTX 690 .

Hmm. 85% of the GTX690. On a single card..... My god imagine if that came out instead of 104. AMD would've never had a chance. (assuming the myth of gk104 was so good they held 110 back is true). But either way, too expensive for a consumer/single card.

Yeah... this seems kind of an odd move.

I mean, if they had it all along why not release it earlier? Price may be indicative of cost to produce. Likely it wasn't cost-effective for mass-production. Thus the 104 was their only option.

This new chips reminds me of the 7800>7800 512MB>7900GTX. Like GK104 is the 7800, this "Titan" is the 7800 512MB, and whatever they release shortly after the Titan will be the 7900GTX. I'm betting this is a stop-gap measure as they probably expect AMD to release the 8900 in the coming months which will likely be in the same performance ball park as this "Titan". However the Titan is expensive but it could still function as a competing part. EDIT: Or maybe nVidia can sell the Titan at $500 - $600 but with very low profit margins, so they plan to sell it high while AMD doesn't have a direct competitor, and when AMD releases the 8970s drop prices on the Titan accordingly untill the proper GTX780 comes out which is much cheaper to manufacture. I'm betting this is the more than likely scenerio.

Downfall to that is if nVidia really charges $900 for Titan and if the 8900s are comparable in performance, could and would AMD charge $900 for the 8970? Likely the 8970 costs less to manufacture than the Titan so that'd be quite a bit of profit for AMD. Then again AMD could charge a more reasonable $500 - $600 for the 8970 making the Titan relatively irrelavant. Is nVidia capable of competing then? Maybe they anticipate this and will have the proper "GTX780" available not too long after they release this "Titan".

Interesting times regardless. I'm really hoping to pickup a new card this winter, maybe two if the offerings are right. Been a few years since I've purchased a new card so I'm rather stoked- by then the pricing should have stabalized on both camp's offerings. And even a single top-end card should match or exceed what I have now with relative ease in all catagories. Pretty stoked.

Oak Ridge. Now they've filled orders for ORNL Titan, they're supplying the server, pro and workstation market, and now a nice low volume headline grabber for the consumer.

This isn't fair because you likely already know how AMD's offerings will stack compared to present-gen, and you may already have insight to nVidia's future offerings as well.

900 seems way too high.

Yeah I'm not getting the $900 is too high claim.

85% of the GTX 690 in terms of performance on a single card. When was the last time we saw such a huge increase in performance from a single card setup?

Sure 2 7970's/680's will probably beat it/match it at roughly the same price but if a game doesnt support SLI/Crossfire or has bad performance with 2 cards that second 7970/680 just became a brick.

Interesting idea... I would think they would be more apt to use this die for workstation lineups as it has a lot more double precision floating point power than a standard desktop card.

That said it would actually make a whole lot of sense if these dies were the reject ones for Titan. If you had a 40% yield of good chips there might be another 20% of those which still work but might not meet the TDP, clock speed, or SMX requirements. Take all of those dies and build a card that has less stringent requirements and try to recoup some of the costs. If you were trying to make 16K good dies that means they made somewhere around 40K dies if the yields were around 40%. They might be sitting on 8,000 chips they want to do something with.

It will be very interesting once these hit the market as they could prove to be VERY enticing for [email protected] users. Workstation FP performance without the workstation prices.

With Kepler, NVIDIA had a much different DP rate for GK104 and smaller dies, than they did with GK110 (the big die in this card). The desktop and workstation cards based on the same die (i.e. GK104 derivatives) have the same DP performance. Where it's different is the GK110 dies, the SP to DP ratio is much lower meaning more DP performance, but this card is only in the Tesla market currently.

Question is, does that DP rate benefit workstation use? If so, then NVIDIA already have a solution for that, NVIDIA Maximus. If not, then just use the GK104 derivatives, including the dual-GPU version.

Titan appears to be a headline grabber, bragging rights product.
