Well, I've lost internet connection at the house for at least till tomorrow. That finally inspired me to root my phone so I can use wireless tethering, and so far it's working great (but slow). Damn 3G... Anyway, what else is there that I should do? I kind of want to put ICS on my phone, but there are strong rumors Motorola/Verizon will roll those updates on the 27th~. In which case, will I have to unroot my phone to get that update?

I've been wanting to put ics on my sgs2 but waiting for the official update from my carrier, which could take ages, its the only reason i rooted, i guess you could play with the cpu clock and such ![]()

Just being able to use Titanium Backup to freeze or remove the bloatware is a nice bonus. And removing all the other monitoring type stuff on the phone for tethering and such is a blessing. Your hardware will you for it.

More often than not you don't have to unroot. An app like Rootkeeper is a good thing to use so you don't lose it after the update.

Install cpu control program such as setcpu and lower the clock to 600MHz, its sufficient enough to run most programs while having better battery and lower temperature

I downloaded the free version of Titanium Backup and I don't see what is so great about it? Maybe I need to spend more time with it but nothing jumped out at me feature wise. Also, apparently Motorola/Verizon release a system update for my phone that I've been putting off. Would I need to unroot my phone to get this update? If I install over the top of it would it 'brick' my phone? Sorry for the nubness of these questions, I just have never messed with my phone to this degree before.

You could just do the update but your previous root will be nullified even when the superuser apps is still there so you need to root again. That is what I experience when I do OTA update from 2.3.5 to 2.3.6

Titanium backup is an excellent backup program that captures software in the current state. So for example, you could backup your Angry Birds progress, and restore that state if you phone was lost, broken, or flashed for a new ROM. Titanium Backup also has the fantastic freezing feature, so you can disable useless software that is wasting RAM on the phone. As for official OTA updates for your phone, typically this will break the root, and often you need to unroot before installing them. Remember that phones are often rooted because of a security hole that someone exploits for the greater good. But if an OTA update plugs that security hole, then the root method you used is now useless. |

The only backup I trust is a nandroid backup. You should look into that now that you're rooted, it's basically a full image of your phone.
