well my 3930k before launch was like 650 to 700 euro without tax and still ended up 599

In most cases I get perfect scaling and that means ~ 90-100% (with the HD6990 running@880/1375) This is with Eyefinity and/or 1920x1080+MaxAA

I don't doubt it, mainly because euro distributors and retailers in general are used to higher profit margins than in the US or canada, where it's more cut throat in terms of competition, and might even be subject to import taxes in some countries and/or considered luxury items since they are high end parts(more heavily taxed), and the same goes for the HD7970 cards.

I remember when the 5870 launched and thought it could've beat the 4870X2, but just closer to the 4870X2 performance, but sometimes it beats the 4870X2 in some games. The 7970 probably won't beat, but just closer to the 6990 and sometimes beat the 6990 (lower clock) in the some games, but would definitely beats the 5870 CF. Remember, the 6970 CF (true stock clock) is faster than a 6990 due to the lower clock.

They need higher profit margins to make up for all of the crazy government regulations on returns and warranties and what not.

Well when it came out it did and didnt beat a 4870x2 but remember most people were saying concluding it was most definatly a single GPU version of a 4850x2 on a stick.

I think i'd be pleased if it was at least a single GPU version of at least a 5970. Unless bulldozer somehow reared its ugly head and found its way to fail the GCN architecture....

Huh? They have the separate divisions for the CPU and GPU. So they don't work together. Does this make sense to you? I'm not sure if you're sarcasm...

That looks much closer to what I was expecting, 40-50% better than GTX580, which is pretty good. I think people are getting a littler carried away thinking its gonna be faster than 6990, but we will wait and see I guess.

so it ends up 10% to 15% slower than a 6990
if so then a 30" screen may only need one card now

If the benches are accurate, maybe a factory over-clocked edition or simply an over-clocked 7970 could reach the 6990. Very impressive raw potential.

tbh I'm thinking more like its going to be 30% slower than 6990 across the board (average), except perhaps epeenmark. I seriously dont see it overtaking a 6990 or even getting within 10% of it.


edit: You know what I take that back, 6970 is in the .8-.9 area on the chart above, and 6990 in the 1.6-1.7 range. Yes it could be closer to a 6990 than I expected in best case scenarios, which is pretty impressive, although most of the time I predict it will be 15-30% slower. A nice oc'd card could perform very well.

Fud: Radeon HD 7970 close to HD 6990

In 3DMark 11

We managed to score some fresh info on the performance of AMD's upcoming Radeon HD 7970 card. Of course, as it was the case with previous performance figures we wrote about, these are only 3DMark 11 figures and are done with the first "usable" driver, but gives at least some insight about the performance that can only get better once the final driver shows up.

When compared to the HD 6970, the HD 7970 is around 50 percent faster in 3DMark 11 Extreme test. It scores around 2800 points while the HD 6970 can get up to around 1800 points. The HD 6990 scores around 3400 points in the same test, but according to our sources, HD 7970 is more than happy with a good OC that draws the card an inch away from the HD 6990. The previously reported 30ish percent was probably taken from 3DMark 11 Entry setting test where all the cards are closer in performance.

We were also told about the 3DMark 11 Performance setting performance that ends up on par with the HD 6990 but we aren't sure if these are with or without OC.

These numbers also mean that the HD 7970 ends up faster than the Nvidia GTX 590 in some cases. Of course, as always, take these numbers with a grain of salt as final driver could change a thing or two, but we guess that we'll know for sure on 22nd of December.

the $400+ graphics cards are way out of the price range of the average gamer, i know it certainly is for me. I'm looking at the $200-$300 price range, so that would be the 7950 right?
