I need to or at least want to hook my Blu Ray player and my Dish box to the net. Do I need to run a seperate wire to each from my router/modem or can I run 1 line and add a switch or a hub? What is the best way to do this?

Either way will work. Running two separate lines will likely be the cheaper route.

I use D-Link green switches. I have a 100 Mbit switch on one setup and a 1 Gbit swith on another. Both have 5 ports. The gigabit was $19 after rebate so it's not that expensive and it cuts the power to unused ports etc. |

If it lasts 7 years you'll get your money back. |

Don't get me wrong because if there were no such thing as a green switch I would still be using them. ![]() |

I went the easy way on mine for the time being, I use a wireless access point and switch to hook up my DTV and Xbox. My whole network is wireless at the moment other than the stuff I have in my office coming off the router. I really really really want to string ethernet around my house and make jacks in the walls, but I've just not had the motivation yet to buy cable and crawl under the house . Wireless isn't bad at all for normal internet surfing but it's been unreliable for big transfers, games and lately the biggest issue is streaming movies because we're doing that more and more these days. It works ok now but I know it could be much better with a wired connection.Maybe I'll luck into a bunch of free cables or something and finally get the motivation to do it .

My modem is upstairs and my HT is 2 1/2 levels downstairs. I ran an ethernet cable from the modem through a hole in the wall to the outside, then all the way around the house and back through a hole in the wall to a switch by the downstairs HT. Switch splits to blu-ray, directv and x-box. Sooo much better then the wireless I was using.

Yeah, we only use wireless in our house for laptops. Everything else is hardwired.

I use powerline ethernet to my PS3. It works great, around 1.5MB/s, but my house is only seven years old.

I think he means that the tv will share its internet connection via HDMI with other devices, obviating the need for a switch at the TV location, or separate ethernet lines to and from a switch located elsewhere. Of course, the X-box, etc. does not have this capability built-in, you'd need an HDMI 1.4 TV, Blu-ray player, and consoles to take full advantage of the capability or eliminate the need for dedicated ports on a switch.
