Yeah, I am doing my research by looking at game issues with 58XX series cards in the catalyst forums. Also gives me time till end of this week to finally decide on this fiasco. Also lowered the price of my graphics card to attract some other guy to purchase. Card goes for roughly 230$ retail and my price is 175$ for a used card. Should be ok for most people here.

I paid like 330$ or something for it back in the day.

I think you are wary of buying an ATi card, not weary; you are weary of this issues you had with the current card.

With prices as they are right now if you MUST do it now get the 5850. The 5870 is a great card but unless you have a monster monitor the performance difference is not worth the price difference.
I would beg to differ...I upgraded from the 4870 to 5870 and the performance on my 24 inch monitor is very apparent. Last but not least the 5870 runs FAR cooler which is something I have been looking forward to.

But you have a monitor size that will allow the 5870 to stretch it's legs a bit more then I think KickAssCop has. A 4870 will push 22" and below just fine with hardly no effort, but get up into the higher resolutions and the 5870 really starts showing off it's muscle.

Saucy...

As for monitor etc, since I have no plans to upgrade my monitor anytime soon I am just getting a 5800 series card for DX11 alone. As stated a bit earlier, performance with my current card is not an issue in games etc apart from select few. Another reason to upgrade is that my current card is doing 105C in games and sounds like a dust buster when tempratures go over 100 C. I think I need to clean it but after a month it goes back to its routine of whining like a bitch.

When a 4870's fan starts that whining crap, it's time for wall mounting. Unless you want to deal with replacing it's cooler, it's time to retire that card. Wall mounting may be too extreme a retirement plan for your old hardware, but you get the idea...

What. The. Fark?

You serious? I thought it was spinning up because temprature was hitting 105C. Temprature was hitting 105C since I haven't cleaned the card for a while. Didn't know that it was going to die out soon. DAMMIT!11

why? it always whines at max speed

edit: i used to run manual for a year, last month i flashed bios & have it automatic, with target temp ~85
lots of games dont need 100% gpu usage, so it's fairly quiet, only max during crysis/shattered horizon/arma2... i think that's it

When my 4870 is at 100% fan speed, it NEVER whines. It hums on a low sounding note very loudly and healthy sounding, even when dusty. Whining is a VERY bad sign.

I don't have a recording device so you can record it and I can verify if it's the same sound I am getting.

On a more positive note, the guy who wanted to purchase the card wrote back today saying that he is trying to sell off his card. Once he does, he will purchase mine. Sounds like a plan and I can wait till start of next month for purchasing the 5850 since Dirt 2 doesn't come out until then. Maybe it's next month that I get 5850, Windows 7 and Dirt 2 all at the same time and get disappointed once and for all...
