the point is amd released benchmarks of an 'engineering sample' clocked at 3ghz or higher and compared it to core 2 duo but amd is only launching barcelona for desktop at 2 or 2.2 ghz. so the performance ur expecting wont arrive till amd ramps up to 3 ghz.

A motherboard editor at Anandtech in a thread stated they don't come alive till 2.4GHz. He tried to used a supercharged engine as example, but said once the clocks are ramped up...

First *real-world* benches of Barcelona?

The latest Barcelona chips are B02 steppings with one more to go. Believe me, the reason we did not post any numbers at Computex or since then is the simple fact that the CPU/boards/BIOS have undergone dramatic changes over the course of the summer. If you have an earlier stepping there is a very good chance that HT and the secondary cache is disabled, this will affect the benchmarks dramatically. We expect to see final stepping chips and board revisions early next week, until then, it is all speculation for the most part.

The one caveat that I will add, this chip really does not get into a groove until you get over 2.4GHz and then it scales incredibly well. Also, the first RD790 boards we have will undergo another spin so any Phenom results with those boards are subject to interpretation depending on whether you like AMD or not.

I don't know what is going on with their performance tests but they claim my PC is a piece of crap and even X2 4400+ would beat up my CPU.

AFAIK the proc hasn't arrived yet. I'm sure he's itching to rerun the tests when it does arrive!

Anything w/ less than four cores (a dual socket dual core system meets this requirement) gets the same treatment. Including all of AMD's current single socket offerings.

It seems like their test doesn't determine the actual clock rate of CPU.

Unless it's been stripped down from the software I work on, then yes, it does read clock rate. It may not display it tho. Every OEM has different requirements they want to show, so they do get some choice on what is displayed and what is not. AMD is famous for not talking about clock speeds, seems that may have come over into the SRL test's output settings.

Due to arrive on 9/11??? I'd be tripping out on that, making sure none of my parts get hijacked in route or arrive with strange beards attached...

I wouldn't get Vista unless you have a big desire for pain
Lots of apps not running properly, plenty of driver problems, network braked out by playing audio, reactivating everytime you change hardware or update your Bios etc.
I'd rather stay with XP or XP64, much less problems.

Ahhh, you must be one of the poor souls who stayed on 98 while the rest of us enjoyed years of XP. (sarcasm)I love it when people show such shortsightedness in their advice to others(/sarcasm). That's totally uncool of you. Do you think EVERYBODY should be stuck in the same stone age as you? Caveman knows what he's doing and has no need of such shortsightedness.

The 2 OS's you mentioned as the "safe choices" went throught the EXACT same number of problems, and most of those problems were the exact same ones you listed. In fact, both STILL have thier fair share of problems. Wanna drag out the old security question? Your beloved XP is so full of security holes that don't exist in Vista, it's sickening. XP is like the swiss cheese of the industry for security. How many holes can we find today?

Lots of apps not running properly, plenty of driver problems, network braked out by playing audio, reactivating everytime you change hardware or update your Bios etc.
I'd rather stay with XP or XP64, much less problems.
Thanks for your feedback, but my own experiences with Vista show it to be quite pleasant. Appreciate the heads up, though.

My experiences with Vista have been pretty good, very few errors. That said, the only reason I'm running Vista is for DX10.

I'm not enough of a Windows geek to spend time tweaking it and seeing the differences.

Vista is fine; no problems here at all. Miles better than XP in all areas.
