AMD, NVIDIA, continue to lose graphics share to Intel

Jon Peddie Research has compiled their first round of MarketWatch reports for Q4'09, and according to their research, the numbers look good for Intel. Fueled by strong sales of Atom netbooks, and "strong growth" in the desktop PC segment, Intel's share grew from 53.6% of the market in Q3'09 to 55.2% in Q4.
JPR says that AMD gained share in the notebook IGP segment, but actually lost share in both the desktop and notebook GPU segments. Keep in mind that AMD just shipped their latest Radeon 5000 series cards in Q4. AMD says they've shipped 2 million DX11 GPUs -- apparently that wasn't enough to hold off NVIDIA though, as JPR says NVIDIA "picked up a little share overall. Nvidia's increases came primarily in desktop discretes, while slipping in desktop and notebook integrated."
So basically NVIDIA managed to grab some share from AMD in the discrete graphics card market thanks to the 40-nm Radeon shortages from last year. NVIDIA slipped a little in IGP though. This downward trend will likely continue as Intel ramps up Clarkdale and Pine Trail, while AMD will introduce their 8-series IGPs soon. NVIDIA's focus will shift to tablets, cell phones, and other portable devices like Zune HD instead.
NVIDIA's overall GPU share for Q4 came in at 24.3% (down from 25.3% in Q3'09) while AMD finished third with 19.9% (down from 20.1% in Q3'09).

no one buys it because they want it. they just get it cause they have no idea what they're buying and/or have no need for GPU's beyond the casual PC use.

not really surprising. casuals are the meat of any market.

Pretty much. The people who buy a computer and call the case a "brain" or "Hard drive", etc.. These are the people that buy a computer and its equipped with Intel graphics.. I would hardly look at this as "good news" for Intel graphics.

That's not meant for gamers and something else but mostly laptop has those. But I never say intel's graphic chips suck at all just because of it is a very simple for people who doesn't play games alot or video editing and others. Just web browser and movies....you know? But again, AMD and Nvidia do have that way too, for IGPs.

hehe, this is going to be interesting for 1st quarter 2010, I predict ATI dramatically goes up and Nvidia, well further down. By the time Fermi is starting to have decent quantities that buyers can buy it will be the end of the 2nd quarter with ATI updates released. I really don't see it too rossy for Nvidia this year, now next could be way different depending on how successful ATI is with their next generation.

I thought ATI's discreet market share actually went up from 2008 to 2009 fourth quarter results, not by much, like .5% or something. Anyways ATI should do very well this and next quarter. I wouldn't be surprise if ATI takes Nvidia on discreet market share this quarter.
