Those types of stats are always skewed due to the inclusion of people who play simple flash games, simple text based browser games, the free games that come with windows etc. Nothing wrong with that, nothing against casual players.
Publishers, developers and studios don't care about those stats, the stats they care about are where primarily lies the population of gamers who regularly purchase $60 dollar titles.
That's the market they care about, and that's why consoles have so much influence over the market.
Consoles have a very large percentage of the "regularly buys $60 titles" user base, which is why top devs like CDProject Red will give priority development time to those platforms. And why they will not hesitate to delay a title if they need more time to focus on those platforms.
