RANDR _does_ work, you must disable DGA for it to work. I have been using it since at least the 3.7 days.
Now can everybody repeat after me, 'The fps value from glxgears carries
NO relevance for anything beyond verifying hardware acceleration. Period.'
I am willing to be enlightened, but it is such a simple application that it shouldn't be used used for comparison between driver releases - let alone between implementations. Use a real benchmark if you want to complain.
Of course, if ATI tuned the drivers to give an amazingly high glxgears fps, then I don't think anybody would be impressed.
