Best Tactical Shooter..?

Which game from this genre do you think is currently the best..?
The reason for this thread is that I want to know if I'm missing out on some good games.
I would have to go with America's Army from what I've played so far.

Malachi1313 Jan 28, 2003 09:39 AM

I have to agree with you there. I'm in the ARMY and it cut's the mustard. Now if they could only simulate thirst, fatigue, hunger, and high levels of stress...But then again you can do that yourself by setting your computer on a tread mill while carrying a 30 pound backpack!!! Please don't hold me accountable for what I just said I'm feeling kinda whacky right now....:p ;)

CS still owns all tactical games!
face it people play more tactically in cs than any other online shooter

McTurok Jan 28, 2003 10:13 AM

Personally I like Battlefield 1942. When you have team-mates playing "as a team" you can just walk all over the other team.

I was in a 32 player games last night and about 4 games in a row we just walked over the other (American) team.

I was soooo, much fun to play with others who will fix your tank, team up and rush the base from the air, ground, and snipe.

There is just such a broad range of attack options. I got bored with CS because it was just "rush or camp". Man
does that get boring.

With Battlefield 1942 you can at least respawn and help out your team again.

I just love that game.:bleh:

P.S. My girlfirend didn't hear me say that last sentense.;)

To be honest, I somehow missed it when tried playing CS.
All I saw was a bunch of jumping morons, running around and shooting madly. You got UT2003 for that.
I do not mean to offend anyone, but this is what I saw and this is what I base my opinion on.
On the other hand, AAO's community is amazing. A lot of skilled players that do not tell you to go f*ck yourself when you ask for help or just f*ck up unintentionally.

McTurok Jan 28, 2003 10:30 AM

AAO???

s p i k e r Jan 28, 2003 10:52 AM

YES Battlefield 1942 is an amazing game... lots of fun :P I love staying with my sniper gun and just wiping out the bazooka bregaiders w00t... I just hate it when a tank comes by lol... cant do anything.

CS is still more DM than tactical. Clan matches can include tactics but even they often turn into death match play too. If they removed the AWP (i.e. Railgun) maybe that would change things. But, nearly all public play and most clan matches aren't really tactical. If you are talking HL games, I think Natural Selection is much more of a tactical game. (Not sure if it's a pure shooter though).

What about Operation Flashpoint and Ghost Recon? What do you guys think of those? I enjoyed Ghost Recon, will start playing tonight the 2 expansions.

Myself I love Return to Castle Wolfenstein!
And I can't wait for the expansion pack :)

Aside from that, I would have to go with America's Army,
the strategy involved when playing with good teammates is amazing!

bigbacon Jan 28, 2003 06:18 PM

Operation Flahpoint hands down.! the most realistic game one can buy

P1x44r Jan 28, 2003 06:27 PM

It started with Counter Strike, now someone names RTCW...
Well it looks like we'll see:

nominated for the best tactical shooter...

:D

BennyBoy Jan 28, 2003 07:02 PM

I like Raven Sheild at the moment :D

Very Tactical ! 1 shot and good night :p

jonmcc33 Jan 28, 2003 08:15 PM

Those who voted Counter-Strike haven't played any other FPS, do not listen to them.

My vote goes to two games:

1. Operation Flashpoint - hands down the best tactical FPS ever made. Freakin' Marines use it for training for God's sake!

2. America's Army

Why these two? Because most of the time it requires you to bring up the sights of your gun to actually kill an enemy. That's as real as it gets and I've fired the M-16 twice in my real life military career. You don't walk around with the gun at your side and use some magical crosshairs to shoot an enemy.

Raven shield is great, but the community needs work. Ghost recon is great but the community is small. Rogue spear/urban ops/ all extra packs, is great, the community is great, AND will probably kick the crap out of most beginners. ( 3 years of play will do that, similar to cs just more specialized.)

Battlefield is great when the teamplay is around. Mohaa is alright but lacks in the details department. Ut2003 is good but you run into alot of 13yr olds that "ownz" you.

AA is good, and considering the price is great. Operation flashpoint is great but really only on a lan. The netcode still blows. Many different choices :)

America's Army is ****e. It looks good, but other than that its nationalistic rubbish. Yes, I have played it, before you ask.

Operation Flashpoint probably takes the crown... for now. The original soldier sim, huge landscapes, vehicles and numerous mods. The graphics look a tad dated (still decent though) and a shame that there's not much option when it comes to multiplayer. Servers (which aren't passworded) are a ***** to find and players always drop out (it really needed a drop-in feature).

Bringing in the rear is Vietcong. We've only got the demo, but its look great. Highly recommended if you want a FPS geared more towards realism.

BF1942 is fun, but it isn't a tactical shooter. Its an arcade game.

tuphdc Jan 28, 2003 09:11 PM

I've played many tactical shooters.

IMHO, Counter-Strike.

Requires skill as much as smarts. It hasn't become the most popular online FPS because it sucks.

jonmcc33 Jan 28, 2003 09:59 PM

Yeah, Vietcong is very sharp but the demo servers have gone downhill with all the cheating through the holes in the game. It is a fun game though.

1madman1 Jan 28, 2003 10:02 PM

Ghost Recon and Operation Flashpoint are my faves.

Crawdaddy79 Jan 28, 2003 10:45 PM

Yeah, definitely Operation Flashpoint...

It's a bit frustrating trying to play it.. you'll be running through some trees and you'll die out of the blue from a head shot wound from a guy about 200 meters away that you didn't see...

But that's how it is in real war I guess...

I'm in the Army too... I tried playing America's Army, but it was just too ''Hooah" for me :)

|-|ahaha Jan 28, 2003 10:55 PM

Operation Flashpoint!
If you let go the bad habits of other supposed tactical FPS (BF, CS, ...) you will have one of the best gaming experience ever.

Forgotten Jan 29, 2003 07:56 AM

My vote - AAO:

Im not sure how CS can be considered a tactical shooter, although popular its very unrealistic. The biggest problems with the game are the weapons strength, and the ablity to jump and shoot at the same time. That and the players look like they are practicing ballet make you wonder how it ever became so popular in the first place.

What AAO: has going for it is its need for team-work; the penalties for injuring/killing team mates and its limited cheating. Although cheating occurs its much less rampant compared to CS and since games are supposed to be fun; when cheaters prosper who has fun then?

Also when the final code gets merged in the upcomming patch, both graphics and net stability should be increased considerably. From the screen shots Ive seen of the upcomming "Radio Tower" map, its level of detail looks very impressive. All in all, AAO: biggest strength relies on the community; which to me is unrivaled. Ive seen people do some amazing things when they work as a team, and fall apart when they dont. That aspect alone shows the "tactical" strength this game has.
