Apple Event 2018

New phones on tap, possibly ipads, airpods, and macbook air refresh.

Time to follow the sheep to feed the most valuable company in the world.

Elysian Sep 12, 2018 01:01 PM

Look forward to hearing about how Razeus won't buy this one because Apple is too predictable and boring, only to find out he actually pre-ordered it the moment pre-orders open up.

I guess Iíve out of the rumor loop but 7nm for the A12 caught me by surprise. If these phones actually start shipping out soon that should bode well for AMDís reported plan for launching 7nm this year too.

The XS with the 6.5" screen is nice and all, but about as exciting as a new tie. I felt the same way about the Note 9, so I think the homogeneity of the smart phone industry is getting to me.

logical Sep 12, 2018 01:47 PM

No new airpods... boo. Probably going to be 1199 for a 256gb iPhone X S Max(thats a mouthful)

So nothing unexpected and most leaks were on point.

First off theyre ugly lol. Second getting past that you can't even skip songs with invoking Siri. That's a big downside for me as I skip constantly while riding my bike. Or if you set it to do that you can't change the volume. It's just weird they didn't think of this stuff beforehand.

Going to be picking up the Apple Watch.

Elysian Sep 13, 2018 07:27 AM

18 hours of battery life from the Apple Watch is pretty awful. Even the cheapest Android Wear devices claim 24hrs. My FitBit Ionic gets 4-5 days.

I dont have any smart watch cause I cant see a need for one in my life but Id say if it can get through the whole day without a charge thats good enough. Im sure if you idle the watch and not play with it and use it normally it would last longer. I dont think my wife has had her series 3 ever die on her.

I like not having to charge my Ionic very often. Granted, I sleep with it on, it tracks my sleep, and I get a lot of utility out of it.

The thing that annoys me is the videos still extend to the notch. Why don't they black that part out when playing videos?

Thats just how apple chooses to show it on videos. You can scale video back so that it stops at the notch and you get the full view minus the notch. The only problem with that is that it scales back on both sides so you lose considerable amount of viewing space in doing so. What apple should do is scale it back and push the video over to the right to maximize the screen minus the notch. It wouldnt be perfect scaling but it would be better than zoomed in and -vert on video to utilize the full screen viewing.

Why do people keep spending this crazy amount of money on these things? This is getting absurd. No phone is worth that much money.

logical Sep 14, 2018 09:03 AM

Did my part in feeding the beast and playing sheeple - pre-ordered the max. Its going to be interesting going back to a bigger phone. Sometimes I pick up my wife's 7+ and Im like wtf this is so goddamn big.

Prices are only going to go up. Samsung matched the 1k price point with the note 9s expect them to follow suite until they cant anymore.

As for buying a new phone every year...is it needed? Nah. But my phone is my most used device of all devices(computers, tablets, consoles and even more than my TV) so it doesnt make sense to cheap out on it to me.

Lazy8s Sep 14, 2018 09:28 AM

They're going to have to hit a point sooner or later where customers decide the ROI just isn't worth it any more.

That said I work with folks whose phone is their be all end all go to device, especially for work. They would be lost without it, so it makes sense to me for them to chase a better device if they can afford it. For someone like me that's 90% personal/play and 10% "other" I've already hit that point of no ROI.

I'll never spend more than $500 on a phone. That's what I spent on my Essential, and it's fantastic. The prices for Apple and Samsung and Pixel are just ridiculous. I spent more than that on my 6s+, but I was also able to sell it for $300 or so when I was done with it. Phones shouldn't cost as much as a nice Surface Pro.

Lazy8s Sep 14, 2018 09:31 AM

It'll be interesting to see if Apple makes up for the questionable iphone X sales with this next go around.

I think we are going to be hitting that ceiling soon. Probably on the next iteration of apple phones.

Thats great and all but people will buy it no matter what which will keep the prices high as hell. Im part of the problem.

Sometimes I wonder if Apple would make more money if they sold volume versus high price. Make the phone say 500-600 bucks and have5-6 buy the phone instead of 1-2.

I also think part of the allure with shiny new phones is social status too. As vain as it sounds people look at that stuff the same way people look at you when you pull up with a nice/ugly car.

People will always do things until they won't. There will be a breaking point if this upward trajectory continues. Their sales have been trending down since 2015 according to that link Lazy8s posted.

For sure, I think we are just about there as noted above.

What a world we live in where 20 million units sold is described as a failure.

Yeah it's crazy lol. Well, I hope buyers get more for the money this time around than last. Everyone I know who got an X expressed a bit of disappointment that for the most part, not much had changed other than the form factor.

I don't know what the most requested features are among the user base, but it would be nice to see something unexpected from Apple.

The X was a huge change for the iPhone. They took away the iconic home button, added FaceID, and for the first time put in OLED in an iPhone on top of all the little things they always polish up.

I felt like the X that I have now is probably the most problematic of all iPhones I have ever had. It feels like the software just doesnt have to polish that iPhones usually do. Its just the little things that add up.

This new max will be the same exact thing just a bigger screen. Anyone buying this phone should know its just an S version so theres really no new game changing features.

I think the sweet spot is that iPhone XR that comes in new colors it basically has all the features of the XS phone minus the double camera and OLED for like 300-400 bucks cheaper. That phone will probably be the money make for apple this generation.

I should have clarified it's the OS I was referring to. The physical changes were way overdue. Little things like linking apps that are commonly used in multi tasking and creating an icon for that, among others would be nice...

On the XR, my wife's 6s (trusty little beast) is starting to fail and I may grab that XR for her.
