The Essential Phone now $499

I guess it wasn't selling well. Probably make a nice backup/business phone.

https://www.theverge.com/2017/10/22/...ut-499-android

Essential is slashing the price of its eponymous phone, down to $499 at its website. That’s a $200 price cut from the original $699 price, less than two months after it began shipping to customers. There is really no other way to read the move except as a signal that it wasn’t selling well at $699 — especially given that the only US carrier stores it’s available in have “Sprint” above the door. It certainly doesn’t help that it now has to face the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL head-to-head.

Kind of hard to go up against Google and Samsung at $700 price points.

Looks like an awesome phone. It's really the only Android phone I have any interest in at all.

Razeus Oct 23, 2017 11:13 AM

We'll see what happens during Black Friday in a few weeks.

Elysian Nov 1, 2017 08:15 AM

I just ordered one, with the $99 replacement plan. Price is really good, reviews seem solid, and my iPhone's battery seems to be slipping. I'll probably be back to Apple in 1-2 years, we'll see though. I can still sell my iPhone for a good amount, makes the change pretty inexpensive.

make sure to post your impressions, i'm really curious

They just received a camera software update that fixes alot of issue the camera had.

This is probably the best Android phone on the market right now. At least in terms of value to performance.

edit: more on their blog

Nice, that's great to hear. I'm looking forward to trying it out, but won't sell my iPhone till I know for sure I'm good with the new device.

Everything does these days lol

Elysian Nov 5, 2017 10:06 AM

I think it's going to be delivered tomorrow, it's already in Austin.

Elysian Nov 6, 2017 05:10 PM

This thing is NICE. The fingerprint sensor works very well, the phone feels super premium and very nice in the hands. It's heavier than I expected, but much smaller than my 6s+. It's as if you cut the top bezel off the 6s+ entirely, and extend the screen halfway down the home button. Really impressed by this thing in my short time with it. I also didn't have to call MetroPCS to set it up, so that's a nice thing. Wasn't so lucky when I transferred my iPhone to them...

Deactivate iMessage first!

Done already.

Razeus Nov 6, 2017 06:39 PM

It looks premium. I honestly think it's the best value in Android right now.

It's stock Android right?

Elysian Nov 6, 2017 07:08 PM

Yeah and it works really nicely right out of the box. I'm thoroughly impressed. I also like that it will unlock the phone if I just touch the fingerprint sensor, I don't have to hit the power button at all, same as my iPhone.

Elysian Nov 6, 2017 09:50 PM

Snapped a couple pictures with the wifes Xperia...

It's almost comical how big the 6s+ is, and the 7+ and 8+ as well.

Also iPhone has been off the network, only on WiFi, for 4-5 hours, and it's still sucking the battery down

ASCI Blue Nov 7, 2017 12:54 AM

Given how hard I am on stuff, maybe I should add this to my list. Titanium body..jeez.

I picked up my 6S Plus on Monday morning to get ready to reset it to stock. It has 10% battery life. It was at 100% the previous Friday when I took it off network. iOS 11 isn't nice to 6 & 7's.

It's down to $449 at Best Buy now. You're not going to find a better phone for that money.

I saw, I'm still waiting on my backup plan (read credit card) to arrive now that my score has bounced back from ****. While it breaks my $400 limit given what materials are used and some of the other features, it seems that 450 - 500 is VERY reasonable for this class of phone.

logical Nov 7, 2017 10:32 AM

Yeah, youre not going to get anything better than the price of this phone. Stop being a cheapskate.

There's being cheap and being broke. I am of the latter. I have yet to have a phone last beyond 2 years successfully.

This could sway me to dump apple.

EDIT: Does it come unlocked? Too much to ask?

editedit: nevermind, sure does :)

ASCI Blue Nov 7, 2017 11:23 AM

It is unlocked if you buy direct and possibly through Best Buy.

Yep, BB's site shows it unlocked - I may have to score one...

ASCI Blue Nov 7, 2017 11:54 AM

The more I read the more interested I become. This may get bumped to slot 2 mostly due to price. :/

Lots of phone for short money from what I can see. I'm debating trading my 6+ at BB for one soon. The apple watch would go too. That should make for a somewhat decent trade in value.

Razeus Nov 7, 2017 01:20 PM

...somehow I feel like I need a business phone.

This is very true, at 450 it's very reasonable. For me as an end user, I question the *need* for most of the things this phone offers at it's price point. I'm not so attached to my phone that stepping down an entire price point (sub 300) isn't a viable option. I'm also vain in some ways so having something pretty matters hence my interest in other brands.

Same here - I just don't "need" a high end phone, but I would also like something a little eye catchy too.

At this stage of the game, a nice screen and 128Gb or so would suit me just fine. If that happens to come packaged in a sweet looking and sub $500 package, I'm willing to give it a shot. :)
