mobility x600 vs mobility 9600

I have a sweet little setup ... nc6000 from two years ago. It STILL plays some of the hottest games (albeit, at lower resolutions).

It has a ATI mobility 9600 in it. GREAT, right? The bottleneck is that the thing only shipped with 32mb of RAM. Ouch. Why waste such a great card by pairing it with such little RAM?

I'm looking at other laptops right now, and thinking I'd like to upgrade. I definately want an INCREASE in performance... not just a comperable setup.

I've been looking at the x600 ... is it much faster?

Thanks!

The thing is also shipped with 64MB of v_mem too, but you need to get 1.8GHz with SXGA model as mine :D. Also, the thing of mine was replaced with Dothan 765 (2.1GHz) too . Right now, if you are lucky, you can find the thing with 64MB more cheaper on Ebay.

Mob. x600 is just the 9600 or 9700 (that means both the old 4 pipe cards) as PCIe version. It only gets more ram, it's not really faster.

The first real increase in performance is X700 (8 pipe X800 architecture) or x1600 (4 pipe x1900 architecture with 12 pixel shader processors). Those are already available in different mid-price notebooks.

I was in the same boat a while back... and ended up getting a notebook with the x600. I benchmarked both.. and my x600 was significantly faster, but they were comparable... of course, my processor speed went from an athlon 64, 3400+ to a 4000+ and videocard memory went from 64MB to 256MB. Im sure the better specs affected the benchmark as well.

Well, x600 is still old tech. I'd get the 700 or 1600 if I were you.
