Playstation 5 holiday 2020

Since we originally unveiled our next-generation console in April, we know that there’s been a lot of excitement and interest in hearing more about what the future of games will bring. Today I’m proud to share that our next-generation console will be called PlayStation 5, and we’ll be launching in time for Holiday 2020.

These updates may not be a huge surprise, but we wanted to confirm them for our PlayStation fans, as we start to reveal additional details about our vision for the next generation. WIRED magazine covered these updates and more in a story that posted this morning.

The “more” refers to something I’m quite excited about – a preview of the new controller that will ship with PlayStation 5. One of our goals with the next generation is to deepen the feeling of immersion when you play games, and we had the opportunity with our new controller to reimagine how the sense of touch can add to that immersion.

To that end, there are two key innovations with the PlayStation 5’s new controller. First, we’re adopting haptic feedback to replace the “rumble” technology found in controllers since the 5th generation of consoles. With haptics, you truly feel a broader range of feedback, so crashing into a wall in a race car feels much different than making a tackle on the football field. You can even get a sense for a variety of textures when running through fields of grass or plodding through mud.

The second innovation is something we call adaptive triggers, which have been incorporated into the trigger buttons (L2/R2). Developers can program the resistance of the triggers so that you feel the tactile sensation of drawing a bow and arrow or accelerating an off-road vehicle through rocky terrain. In combination with the haptics, this can produce a powerful experience that better simulates various actions. Game creators have started to receive early versions of the new controller, and we can’t wait to see where their imagination goes with these new features at their disposal.

While there’s much more to share about PlayStation 5 in the year ahead, we have plenty of blockbuster experiences coming your way on PS4, including Death Stranding, The Last of Us Part II, and Ghost of Tsushima. I’d like to thank all PlayStation fans for continuing the journey with us, as we embark on the future of games.

Awesome, I'm pretty excited about it. I've only had the PS4 for about a year and it's been a lot of fun. The exclusives are pretty amazing. The SSD will be nice

Still keeping my fingers crossed for complete compatibility with the PS4 library.

If they truly want to smash Xbox into the dust they will be striving for that.

I thought backward compatibility was something they were promising from the get go.

It's too soon to pre order. I'm sure you'll get details by the middle of next year, however.

I usually wait for a more robust game library and a price drop, but I sure appreciate people like you guys paying full price for **** launch games on day one. Somebody's gotta be the first penguin in the water, right?

ElBerryKM13 Oct 14, 2019 09:22 AM

I bought a ps4 first day they came out and never played a game to completion in the 3 years i had it.

I will wait until a killer game pop up then ill buy the console.

Meteor_of_War Oct 14, 2019 09:30 AM

LOL I still haven't bought a PS4. I'm only now finally seriously considering buying one since Death Stranding is less than a month from release. Sad to say it but its the only game that has finally hit that "console seller worthy" level for me. Hideo Kojima games are always a true must buy for me. Damn them for making it a PS4 exclusive.

But even still I think I'll wait until around Black Friday to see the best deals.

Indeed it is! :D

Kojima Production's highly-anticipated debut independent game Death Stranding has finally been confirmed for PC, with a summer 2020 release window currently pencilled in.

Death Stranding is due on PlayStation 4 on November 8th - with reviews due to drop this coming Friday - and it marks Hideo Kojima's first work after his split with Konami back in 2015. It's been realised with support from Sony, with Death Stranding made using Guerrilla Games' Decima engine. Death Stranding's release on PC next year will mark the debut of the Decima Engine on PC. Publisher 505 Games is to handle the PC version.

E3 next year will be huge. Both consoles should be announced by then and we will get our first look at next gen games.

And shorter story modes.

i haven't kept up with so called AAA blockbusters (mainly cuz a large chunk of them do not interest me)
Are quick time events still a thing? or has the occurance of those been reduced?

The cartridge idea is likely a way to combat installation times, which have been a major problem during the current generation of games.

logical Nov 10, 2019 12:24 PM

That would be very cool to go back to cartridges to install games. Get rid of these download times. Now the problem is going to get the industry to conform to not have day 1 patches and have full games on the cartridges like we used to have back in the day.

That's the key right there. Cartridge is useless if you have an 80GB day one patch.

I mean if the cart tech is high speed flash based (aka ssd tech) that can be written to it could be super handy.

Lots of rumors floating around that PS5 will be have bc with all previous Playstations. Looks like Sony is responding to the gauntlet that ms threw down last generation.

Day one purchase for me if that's the case. :)
