AMD Radeon HD 7990 Previewed at GDC 2013

AMD just completed their Press Conference for GDC 2013, covering many subjects of which we will go into more detail soon. However, one announcement needs to come to you now, and it's a preview of a new graphics card coming in the first half of this year - The AMD Radeon HD 7990.

With dual 8-pin 150W power inputs this is a high performance, high power card. The triple fan design indicates a high heat load, so the question becomes - what is it?

New Zealand was the first Dual-GPU product based on GCN technology, teased at the Tahiti GCN tech day in 2011. This product didn't make it to the consumer side, instead appearing as a Server GPGPU card, to FirePro S10000.

The new card details are still under wraps, but the codename Malta is being bandied about instead of New Zealand. AMD say it is whisper quiet and uses two of the AMD Radeon HD 7900 series GPU's.

The king is back.

Looks like 4 display ports, at least 3 with maybe one HDMI. Now will it X-Fire with a 7970?

Mangler Mar 27, 2013 11:31 AM

Looks like the bf4 demo was running on this beast.

It will probably be $100 cheaper then a Titan and smash it in most games except those that don't scale.

With better game and driver support too.

Lets have it tested using FCAT :yep:

It was, in Quadfire.

S!

Already throwing money on the screen! If AMD sorts out their Crossfire issues in the drivers then I can finally jump to that bandwagon. Last time I had anything in SLI/Crossfire was with Voodoo2 :D

Yeah, those CFX profiles are incredible right now.. Clearly no microstutter issues at all.

Could be worse.. they could fry the card, rendering (pun) it useless :-O

The latency between frames is not exclusive to Crossfire. Nice try.

You said one was better than the other, if anything. It'd be the other way around. But thats neither here nor their because both camps have their issues.

That and you also compared it to a TITAN, which is a SINGLE card. Which would have less driver issues than a 7990 having to utilized CFX profiles.

Did I miss something? What happened on a driver frying a card? (Not being sarcastic, genuinely curious).

was 2 different versions of drivers that NV released some time ago that lead to cards being fried.. iirc was 196.75 WHQL the GTX 590s and older GTX 8800/9800s as well as the 285.38 betas causing failures in GTX 500 series.

Think I remember some driver killing mobile chips too (?)

You say that like there are only issues, and no satisfactory results possible for anyone.

I don't think you're being objective.

No i was being synical in mirroring his post just in the opposite direction. I even said in a further post both have issues. Whether one is better than the other is subjective and infactual. If anything based on what games you play.

This might sound stupid...but hasn't the 7990 been out for awhile? :hmm:

caveman-jim Apr 5, 2013 09:18 AM

No, PowerColor/Club3D and ASUS released their own versions which weren't official AMD products. ASUS have sold all the ARES II cards and PowerColor will be offering the Devil13 in market alongside the new AMD reference card.

dmanna Apr 11, 2013 09:31 PM

I could use just a little more gpu power. I need to sell a 5870,4870x2 and a 7970. How much is a fair asking price for a 4870x2

[chiploco] AMD Radeon HD 7990 dual-GPU launch date confirmed

Quote:

AMD will be launching their flagship Radeon HD 7990 dual-GPU graphics card on April 24, credible sources from within the industry told us. Some selected members of press have already got hands on samples of HD 7990 and they are testing the graphics cards for launch day reviews. However, it is not confirmed whether the 24th of April is the paper launch day or card will also be available for public on the same day. Some reports tell us that in Europe and America, the card will be available for purchase on same day but in other regions of the world, the card will hit retail channel on a later date.

The Radeon HD 7990 was first shown on GDC by AMD last month. And on a later date, picture of two HD 7990s running in Crossfire was leaked on the internet. From the details that are known as yet, the Radeon HD 7990 is based on a completely new chip codenamed ?Malta? and it has three 90mm fans for cooling along with two 8-pin PCIe connectors for power.

I'm not sure about the source.
