Windows Update 8/18/15 for Windows 7 and 8x update KB3075249

Thanks for the heads up. That update isn't going on my machine.

Good news is that it is listed as an 'optional' update, for now...

I'm not sure what I'll do if it becomes compulsory. I do know most of the info collected isn't personally identifiable info, but I do a lot of work on my machine, as well as finances. What their collection routine may capture in a memory snapshot....I'm just not comfortable with that.

There is a list of hosts floating around that you can put in your hosts file, though I have put them directly in my router so all my machines are protected.

Oh I forgot all about that. Thank you kind sir.

Ugh... it's getting to the point that I'm terrified to install any optional updates now. I used to install all important/optional updates, unless it was something that I obviously didn't want. Microsoft is so damn cagey with the generic descriptions these days (everything "resolves issues with Windows," regardless of what it really is). Sucks having to research every update now, but I guess that's how it's going to be from here on out.

This particular update I have no issues with. Tracking usage of UAC prompt level can surely be helpful in fine tuning the frequency these UAC prompts are presented to the user.

The fear mongering about Windows Updates is getting to a farcical degree now.

If it's connected to the web, has line of sight or is in any sort of RF range, it can spy on you.

Privacy basically does not exist any more.

I wouldn't shy away from updates at all. Just be aware of what's being installed.

Security holes and little issues regarding user experience are regularly patched, so I do want that. What I do not want are forced driver updates. That's not well thought out imo.

I'm considering upgrading to pro so I can have a little control over that, when/if I ever install 10.

As has been said though, almost any OS on any device we use today tracks to a greater or lesser degree.

Therein lies the issue. I've never questioned/delayed critical updates. (Yes, I have WU turned off, but I check it frequently-- at least every few days-- to make sure nothing new has cropped up. And I never miss a Patch Tuesday. I may be a curmudgeon, but I'm also an upstanding netizen.) In the last couple of years, though, Microsoft has become less and less transparent about what recommended/optional updates usually entail... they all just "resolve issues in Windows." The user has to actively seek out the information (outside of Windows Update) before installing if they truly want to know what is being updated.

I don't care for the way that they snuck the Windows 10 nag onto everyone's machine earlier this year, without notifying users as to what they were really installing. And I also don't care for the fact that they continue to try and push revised versions (along with other updates related to Windows 10) onto my machine even though I've actively hidden them.

If you don't want to upgrade your PC to Microsoft's latest (which I obviously don't want to do, and absolutely will not do unless they at least backpedal on forcing driver updates), then you can't just blindly install updates from Microsoft anymore. You have to scrutinize every single one that isn't marked "critical" to find out what it is... and most of them are related to the Windows 10 rollout of late.

I realize I am in the minority on this. But I'm stubborn and spiteful, and I will fight this to the bitter end.

Oh I agree with you lol. I've stated not long ago that just the mere fact that no matter what I do the windows 10 nagware keeps reinstalling itself has made me not want to install 10 at all. It pisses me off that I have little to no control over a so called "important update" on my system that's nothing more than a few nagging bitchy little lines of code.

Does my attitude show through regarding forced updates? :D

I'm trying hard to be level headed about all of it, and cautious and wary is the best I can manage so far.

Oh, I'm right there with you. I'm just afraid that folks like us are gonna end up losing the fight in the end. I will be dragged kicking and screaming, though... that's for sure. :p

I was able to get rid of the Windows 10 nagware by installing Windows 10. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

:bleh:

oh no you din't....

LoL, well, the choice is currently out of my hands until I get updated drivers for my laptop. Even windows 10 says my lappy isn't supported, so there's that to contend with....

I'll be the old hairy guy one row over holding my breath and having a tantrum...
