Windows 8.1 or 10 as an upgrade for Vista?

I bought a dvd disc from New egg. it says windows 10 home for oem software.
here's my questioin what if I buy another motherboard I should be able to do a fresh intall right?, maybe just call up micosoft etc.it does have a license on the win 10 package for the dvd inside.:hmm:

I've always bought OEM disk for any OS up to now, and I could re-install them without any problem, they activated normally. I've installed them on different configurations as well... I don't know if Win 10 uses a different system though.

I know win 7 you could call them if you used up all your activation and they would give you a bunch of letters and then reactivate I sure hope win 10 will do this:hmm:

I've always done the opposite. I've always bought the retail version so that I didn't have to worry about the license transferring. Technically speaking, the OEM version was only meant for one set of hardware, but it's always been something that MS never really seemed to be bothered to enforce. Not sure if that policy (or lack of one) still stands now that they're "giving it away" to so many users.

I think I read that Win8 actually switched the licensing around and made the OEM version the one to buy, but then they switched back to normal when they released the media for 8.1. That doesn't really make much sense, though, so I might have it wrong.

No idea if Win10 behaves any differently, but I will be buying the full edition when/if I upgrade my personal machine regardless. It's not a huge difference in price anyway (I think it's only an extra $60 for the retail version of Pro). And my nephews will be getting the retail edition when I upgrade their PC, too, since it's not eligible for the free upgrade anyway.

Still I don't see why I paid 100.00 us dollars for it I mean cmon You need to upgrade some componets every two years at least.

But that's the "gotcha" bit right there, isn't it?

It's just been relatively pain-free to get around it up to now. And it may well stay relatively pain-free... I honestly have no idea.

I just always bought retail so that it didn't even figure into the equation.
