Rage3D - Input

So there have been a couple ongoing threads about current R3D status recently...

I still intend to get Rage3D onto current vB hosted environment this summer as that would remove some of the legacy issues of running the current environment. However, my personal and professional responsibilities have limited my ability to drive change for the site for several years now as everyone is painfully aware.

Of relatively recent changes, being behind the Cloudflare servers has significantly increased security and performance of the site even on its current legacy server and vB version. Longer term we still need to resolve getting off current server hosting equipment as it is well into its life-cycle at this point.

Some have expressed interest in taking over Rage3D so it could have more active administrative and content leadership going forward. I'm not opposed to that idea. But I need to have some confidence that if I turn it over to others it will continue going forward.

I'm happy to sustain the R3D forums at my own loss as long as it makes sense and the community continues. I still have tremendous appreciation for the history and community around the site, and the endless hours I enjoyed in the forums, and then the site itself over the years. At this point being basically totally ad-free, the only site cost mitigations I see are the wonderful souls who still subscribe to the site and a few dollars now and then from VigLink links for non-registered users.

So, if you think you have a vision for Rage3D, and that you are interested in taking it over and moving it forward into the future, private message me, or email me at [email protected]. I am willing to entertain the idea, but I'm not going to do that without some confidence that the site will be sustained.

I look forward to your input.

Hopefully it hasn't been crickets and the people who claimed they would step up have messaged him.

Thanks for your thoughts Ichi. Much appreciated and completely understand the situation :)

If you don't mind, what are the hosting costs per year including all expenses for the service add-ons? If you don't want to post publicly, could you PM?

After the latest episode of boy who cried wolf, I doubt many have any faith things will change so they've just thrown in the towel and moved on.

So many false starts and what could have been's I have to agree. :( I don't understand ichy's words vs. lack of action? A random post or thread every few months doesn't get anything accomplished. And this is coming from a huge fan of Rage. We've got a great core group of members that is dwindling.

I sympathize with your comments bitter. But also with Ichy. Life sometimes gets in the way, priorities change, and not everyone is going to view a certain thing from a specific lens.

KAC asked an important question. If we have an idea of the P&L and can figure out some other basic items, such as upgrade path, change management, etc. re: new or upgrade platform, and figure out some focus areas (reviews and stuff), it'll address the front end items. The forums are where we reside for the most part, and people move on and come back all the time, but a slow death is expected on almost all forums of our type.

There is a big opportunity with Vega and with other items coming out of AMD to get more awareness. Figuring out some of the basics can help with a burst of attention and then it is incumbent on us to engage and retain some of those interested people :)

It's a fun challenge. Saying no faith and what not is not productive. It is a realistic comment, but repeating it over and over doesn't solve things. Having a plan of action and working on that with the people who care is going to yield far more results.

I would guess that at best Itchy breaks even but more than likely this is being run at a loss.

We did have plans that were going on in the background that regular members may not be aware of. I'm not saying anything bad against ichy as we all know life gets in the way. But what is currently going on is a slow death of rage no matter how many rainbows and happy thoughts you throw at it. Paid memberships help and I'm willing to do that if I know the sight will be up going forward. As of now nobody knows that. There are a few mods and regular members that are willing to pitch in to bring the sight back to what we'd all hope it could be. But were are currently at the mercy of one person and the hope he will eventually take the time to get back to us. That is just communication, getting something done is another thing. That being said I still have faith in ichy but its a slow train comin....

Yep, I think that's what it seems like.

Completely understand my good man. I have followed the threads on and off for a while.

For context, I have offered to help. Site and community technology infrastructure and business strategy is one of the things I have done in my previous work life.

Awesome...I hope you get a chance to help!

Then they're doing something wrong because hosting isn't "that" expensive.

What's expensive is sitting there doing nothing while losing members and doing nothing.

But what can I say that hasn't been said a hundred times, it's not like it's been months, it's been years that this was getting changed. Of course obstacles happen, but at this point rage3d.com is in a vegetative state on life support, the longer nothing happens the more likely it's going to go to the point of no return, that if/when they do upgrade its too little too late.

Would I like to see changes? Sure ive been here years, I just think inaction is killing this place.

I have to agree. The tech expertise is available and has been offered by several members, I offered at one time to donate cash to be used as the powers that be saw fit, subscription giveaways or what have you, and even that was never accepted.

Given that, I do think R3D could survive for a good deal longer if given the attention it needs, but neglect ensures a slow spiral downward.

Some great peeps here from all over. I'd hate to see that happen.

Let's not pile up on the negatives folks. I think we all have feelings about where things ought to have gone and what not.

What is it that we CAN do moving forward as a community? That ought to be the focus.

If we have the passion and manpower and money, we can make the incremental improvements and go from there.
