Rage Pro = Ugly

I have been playing alot of games on my rage pro.. and man are they ugly.. there are dots everywhere on textures. Someone told me that is because the Rage Pro has a 256 color texture limitation.. I hope thats not true, is it? if so is it a driver limitation so there is hope that it can get fixed or is a hardware problem? Thanks for your help
BTW the only reason I haven't got a new video card is because my new comp doesn't have an agp port! so I am hoping for something better than the Voodoo 3 to come along in pci

Thanks For your help
Ken

I'm not sure if the 256 color limitation is true.. but i havn't noticed anything that bad in any of the games that i've played (and i've played quite a lot)..

what drivers are you using now, and when did you get the card?

cya..

go find version 5.37 of the drivers...

i think you can find it at cosmo3d.com look for "ATI Rage Pro in Unreal"

those are the only drivers i find suitable for the rage pro

as for me, i'm getting a voodoo 3 sometime soon... it's already been ordered and should ship sometime today

sorry but i just can not put up with this piece of trash card and i have no AGP slots so i'm limited as to my choices. voodoo 3 is the only card i've seen past 4 mb that is PCI, so i went ahead and darted for it

I am currently using the Special Quake III drivers.. not sure about the version # that is... on system device properties it says like 4.11.2560 but I'm not sure if thats right.. the image quality is horrible people don't seem to notice though.. probably because they have never seen better.. here is a perfect example.. go up to a wall and look.. there are lots of little dots (not pixels, these are dithering marks) .. it sucks really bad. My Rage Pro came with the my IBM aptiva.. good computer.. the video card is not winning me over though. Thanks for you help. I will look for those drivers you recommended..

Sure there are dithering dots.. but it's not that bad.. it is running under 16bit colour so you can't really blame it.. but then again, who - in a game - would walk up to a wall anyway? i'm always moving so i barely notice the dither effect..

anD [RP]Fury.. Why do you say that the 5.37 drivers are better than the 5.38? i'd like to know what i don't.. =)

yea you are probably right.. but its just sooo damn ugly :) the problem is I used to use a Rendition V2100.. a great card for its time.. with the BEST image quality.. its hard to go down.. I guess I either have to get a voodoo 3 or TNT1 with pci.. that kinda sucks but ohh well..

I think, also - that the ATi Xpert 128 comes in a PCI mode as well.. you can also get that.. but - i guess after the Rage Pro (a poor card overall anyway,... i also have it) it's hard to go back to ATi.. but you can always give it another chance.. hEh..

5.38 doesn't seem to dither textures therefore it turns the walls into a contour line drawing looking thing

hold on and i'll post the link to a pic

Yes but no matter what it will always be ugly.. I will look into the expert 128 I had no idea it came in pci.. I am think right now that maybe I should get a savage 4.. or a Voodoo III.. not sure.. thanks guys

Whichever card satisfies you the most.. buy one of them.. test it out.. return it.. buy another.. and compare.. get whichever one that you like the best..

as for me - i've never left ATi for another card.. i've had the super old ATi VGA Wonder
(my first vidcard).. then went straight to the Rage Pro (just imagine playing games on an ATi VGA Wonder.. Quake 1 was a blast! hAHah..) the next card i'm trying to aim for the the Fury.. or maybe the 128 Pro? who knows.. i just need the cash first.. =)

[RP]Fury.. i've never seen that happen to me.. try this on the console:

>gl_texturemode gl_linear

i think that may help you out on the 5.38's..

That's wierd.. i don't think mine is taht bad.. hmm.. i'll have to reinstall q2 though to test it out.. that place is right at the beginning though, right?

Hey LINT ive got an Aptiva too an the only video cards that work well on these computers are the ATIs.TNTs wont work for 90% of the Aptiva owners(IBM says there will be a fix for that maybe). Also Voodoo3s dont perform as they should. The other choice is a Voodoo2 but im warning you its gonna look UGLY.
I thing you should get an ATI 16mb PCI card for your system,my friend just got one and he says it works great on his system(yes hes got an IBM too)

Well IMHO I don't like the Savage4 cards. One of the people at my office continualy complains about the conflicts and errors he gets with his Savage4 card, keeps saying he wishes he got a Voodoo3 or a Rage 128 based card, he is basicaly in the same boat as you he dosen't have any AGP Slots, an older 440FX Based Pentium II board.

Persoanly unless I had a very fast system I wouldn't go with the Voodoo3, from what I understand without a very fast CPU you are not realy going to get great perfromance from it anyway, so I'd go with either the TNT or Rage 128 they support 32 bit color.

Wow when I posted this topic I didn't expect but one or 2 replys.like a month later and it still lives, cool. Anyway I still haven't bought a card, I didn't know ATI had a pci version of Fury, if anyone knows what the running price is/where I can order it feel free to link me. And about IBM being bad, I wouldn't say that, I love my IBM very fast, and has been fairly stable since I figured out a bug that was causing random lock ups, of course I do have to question the integrity of someone that creates a computer in 1999 with a DVD drive, but no AGP. I thought agp ports were common place, but thats what I get for thinking I guess.

Don't bother with the Rage 128 either, it has the same crappy 16 bit image quality, although it's slightly better than the Rage Pro in terms of 16 bit image quality. If 16 bit image quality is your primary concern I'd go with a Voodoo 3. The TNT1 & 2 also have good 16 bit image quality but not as good as the Voodoo 3. I think ATI purposely messed up their 16 bit rendering to make their 32 bit look better since that was their main selling point for the Rage 128. Anyways, I got rid of my Rage 128 (tired of the crappy 16 bit image quality) a long time ago and replaced it with a TNT2 and put my Rage 128 in my second computer only to have it replaced again with a Vooodoo 3 3500TV. I hear that with the Rage 128 Pro they fixed the 16 bit image quality though.
