SSC Tuatara smashes top speed record, goes way over 300 mph in Nevada desert

There’s a new “fastest production vehicle” in the world, and it’s produced by an American hypercar company. On October 10, the SSC Tuatara annihilated the previous record set by the Koenigsegg Agera RS. Over two runs, the Tuatara averaged 316.11 mph, smashing the Agera RS’ 277.9 mph average.

That average doesn’t tell the whole story, though. The Tuatara hit a top speed of 331.15 mph in its last run

The most useless performance figure a street car can have.

What kind of tires do they use that can handle that speed I wonder?

Isnt the definition of "production vehicle" something stupid like minimum 10 units sold to the public?

Bugatti worked directly with Michelin to develop tires specifically for the Veyron and Chiron models. I assume SSC did the same thing. It's a good question.

Who cares about that? It's a car hitting over 300MPH. That's badass.

Yeah, I think it's just common sense at this point that top speeds (especially these speeds) are completely irrelevant and are a useless performance metric.

However, I agree with Nunz. This is humans doing amazing things, and it's neat to see. Whether it's rockets, cars, or whatever else is appealing to somebody out there...the engineering, science, and accomplishment is pretty darn amazing. Keep pushing forward and smashing those records, I say.

It's part of why I love Formula1 as much as I do. All that money poured into aerodynamics R&D is what we see 5years, 10years down the line in vehicles everyday people like you and me purchase.

Completely obliterating the previous record is awesome. Maybe something that they figured out will be brought to cars like the Corvette, Mustang, Camaro, etc.

in terms of performance figures, for hyper cars like bugattis and Koenigseggegege. top speed is the mac daddy. they are built specifically for top speed.

it's literally the ONLY performance figure they care about when creating it. thats like saying "the number of seeds it can plant is the most useless figure for this seed-planting tractor"

That thing was still accelerating like a bat out of hell up to 300 or so

Yeah, crazy part is it tapped 331 and he let off...it was still climbing fairly quick.

Article said they backed out due to crosswinds. I hope we get to see what it can really do some day.

Sounds like they should take it out to the salt flats and see what it can really do no?

'Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence' - I was surprised how much the car had smashed the record given how increasingly difficult it gets to fight the wind resistance. When some of the first videos came in providing convincing evidence I thought they were believable but SSC's initial response seemed to confirm the speeds weren't genuine especially 'accidentally' perfectly stitching together the wrong footage which happens to have the right speeds displayed.

It's not surprising the large motoring outlets didn't seem to apply any level of scrutiny to it and left it to 'dumb youtubers' to question and analyse it.
