Making your PC a media extender?

Is this possible? Recently got my HTPC stuff going again, and atm just using windows media center. It works pretty well.

However, would be cool to use my other PC (or more) as a media extender. I did some quick searching and not really finding much that is relevant. Anyone done this or can point me in a direction?

I believe if you have all Vista boxes you can use WMP 11 to share media between them.

I'm not sure if it works on XP with WMP 11, probably it can be a client as well.

If you have an AMD based HTPC you can install the AMD Live! Orb client to share media, too.

Rockin Win7 on the HTPC (AMD powered) and Win7 on my gaming machine (intel powered)

Im not sure what flavor of media player I got going, I'll look into that further. :) Thanks.

You should see both the Win 7 boxes pop up the Media Sharing wizard if you have your network type set to private and file & media sharing enabled. They ought to discover each other automatically and prompt you to allow/deny access to shared media.

For what its worth,....

A lot of people like using a Windows Home Server to serve up media (Photos, Video, Music, Recorded_TV, Ripped DVD's, Pod Casts and so on) to other systems on the network. I'm just starting to get into it myself.

You can build your own, re-purpose an old unused PC or buy a pre-built OEM Windows Home Server system. The HP MediaSmart Servers can do on the fly encoding and streaming to an iPod Touch or iPhone so you don’t have to worry about file format. Streaming to Xbox 360, PS3 or another PC should be no problem naturally.

My Windows Home Server is just an old Athlon 2800+ @ 3200+ / ASUS A7N8X Deluxe system I had laying around unused.

You can download a free 120 day trail of Windows Home Server with Power Pack 1 here (Power Pack 2 is an automatic download after install):

If it helps there seems to be quite a few apps for media sharing (or that have the capability) if for whatever reason 7 MC gives you any problems -- one advantage of some of this other stuff is auto-zapping commercials. Might also check out the new Opera app & see if it has any advantages.

Nvm to my first part I found the info via the links. TY

Second things, I really wanted to try out AMDs Live (Fusion) media player client but I because I only own a gazillion of their graphics card $$$ and lots of TV Tuner cards (and not a processor or theirs) it says I'm ineligible....of all the un-grateful
