For the last several months I've been unable to use windows update because every time I did it got stuck at the login step and wouldn't progress past there.

I FINALLY came across something that worked! Based on a reddit thread, I downloaded and used this software

http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/windows_repair_all_in_one.html

Afterward I was able to successfully install the updates! At long last I can even turn on the update service I'd disabled! WOW!

Stupid Microsoft... :bleh:

Wow...that's really retarded I ever heard. Typical M$.

From what I've read over the months, I was far from alone in experiencing this or other issues with the major OS updates/builds. Yet Microsoft seems to remain befuddled and unable to address them.

What that software seemed to do was "fix" paths, variables, permissions and ownerships more than anything else, but it seemed to do a lot and I wasn't always paying full attention.

Yeah. That sucks. What a shame is that you had to used the software to fix it. I disliked using any software to fix anything that MS broke their own OS or pretend it's not a bug or anything.

I gotta admit I was nervous and definitely backed up both my registry and my drive. Still am that it might have installed something I'm not aware of, despite virus protection and firewall and malware scanning.

But it did, at least, fix Windows. Apparently.
