Manufacturers will be forced to create a universal charging solution for phones and small electronic devices, under a new rule proposed by the European Commission (EC).
The aim is to reduce waste by encouraging consumers to re-use existing chargers when buying a new device.
All smartphones sold in the EU must have USB-C chargers, the proposal said.
Apple has warned such a move would harm innovation.
The tech giant is the main manufacturer of smartphones using a custom charging port, as its iPhone series uses an Apple-made "Lightning" connector.
"We remain concerned that strict regulation mandating just one type of connector stifles innovation rather than encouraging it, which in turn will harm consumers in Europe and around the world," the firm told the BBC.

On the one hand, it seems to be a bit of gov’t over reach to me. On the other, I would love USB-C on everything.

I feel like short term this is good, Get apple to ditch slow lightning in favor of faster USBC.

In a few years? ... ehhh...

Good...ish. Force Apple to finally give up the BS lightning connector.

A design engineer I know from another forum stated some ways that the lightening connector is superior to USB-C, and said it is a more robust design. However, I really am not a fan of the premium-priced, walled-garden, Apple ecosystem and would prefer globally standardized connectors.

They have switched almost everything away from the lighting connector now. The lone hold out devices at this point was the iPhones. Which makes zero sense.

So from that perspective, this is good because we all wondered wtf Apple was thinking when they showed off the new iPhone and it still used the stupid lightning connector.

I really wouldn't mind it being the standard in NA....since having wireless charging the lightening port on my iphone is still virgin territory lol...it's been basically useless to me.

The USB-C wouldn't see much use either, but at least my other cords would work with it if needed.

Apple needs to **** off with proprietary connectors. Industry has standardized, besides Apple.

I keep thinking how nice it would be to have one charger that works on all my devices. It used to be a pipe dream, maybe not for too much longer though.
