Duplicate montitor woes (Windows 10)

I just connected my PC to my TV in the next room. I set the monitors to both display the same thing in the display settings. But every time I install an app, it disconnects my monitor and displays only on the TV, which is a hassle since the TV is in the other room. This happens when I click the OK button with the shield, approving the installer to install. I have grown accustomed to the monitor flicking off and on when this happens on all Windows PCs I've used, but I don't know why it happens. I have to unplug both HDMI cables and then plug in only my monitor.

I tried switching the cables, but it still favors my TV every time. I'm guessing this has something to do with response times between the two devices, so it favors the TV no matter which cable is going to it.

I'm not sure there's a way around that, but is there any way I could at least toggle monitors with my keyboard? Then I could see what I'm doing and manually reconnect the TV in the control panel.

What GPU are you using? Is there an display option to set the monitor as Primary?
In the previous windows I had the options to set which monitor is Primary or Secondary.

It's the ancient nVidia GTX 260.

There's an option to make a monitor primary, but not if you choose to duplicate the view.

Don't know if this will help, but Win+P will toggle the displays. I have mine set up to only display on my monitor (the TV is connected and sits next to the computer) under the Multiple Displays setting under Display -> Screen Resolution.

Then I just use the key toggle to switch between "Computer Only" and "Projector Only." ("Duplicate" and "Extend" are the other options.)

That's always worked like a charm under Win7. Don't know if they've screwed around with that functionality in Win10 or not, though.

Also, NV drivers for the last couple of years have been favoring an HDTV over a monitor if both are connected. My monitor is listed a Display #2, even though it's my primary display. Choosing "Computer Only" when toggling Win+P actually activates the TV.
