Any of you guys having issues with Windows Updates?

Being super irritated by the Win 10 auto updates, I actually turn off and disable the Windows Update service in Win 7 Pro.

Every 2 weeks, I fire it up and search for updates.

Well, yesterday, it just never came back after a goof 2 hours and I installed ALL updates
dating May 30th, except the Windows 10 ones...

Any ideas?

I have Win7 Pro and recently had Windows update hang on searching for updates.

Here's what I did:

Turn off the windows update service. Then go to C:/windows/softwareDistrubution and delete the contents of the folder, but not the folder itself. Restart the windows update service, reboot and let it rebuild the folder. That might take a bit of time to complete (watch your HDD light), but that fixed my update issues for me.

As for the Win10 nags and auto-installs, I installed that "GWX control panel" program quite a while ago and haven't seen any Win10 nags since. There is also one called "Never10" that is supposed to do the same thing, but I never used it since I already had it covered. Either of those would be a good one to look into if you DON'T want Win10.

Anyway, hope that helps you.

Really surprised you're just now seeing this. A lot of us have been experiencing it for at least the last few months.

Search for KB3161664. It's the latest win32k.sys security update, and it seems to magically fix the slow scans, even though that's not what it's supposedly meant to fix. There were two other unrelated updates from a couple months back that also seemed to work in the same way (one of which was the last win32k.sys update, KB3153199). They really did seem to "fix" the scan times, until this month's Patch Tuesday broke them again. KB3161664 was part of this month's updates and seems to be what fixes it again-- for the time being.

If you download and manually install it before scanning, the scan time should be back to normal (a few minutes, at most).

If you eventually managed to get it installed along with the rest of June's updates, then it should be back to normal, too.

At least until next month.

There's also an optional rollup for this month (KB3161608) that includes a supposed fix for all this nonsense... but you can only get it bundled with other optional updates. Typical MS shenanigans. :bleh:

Thanks guys! Holy crap Deadite, that is a hell of a process for updates!

But yeah, updates were quick on the 30th of May and this is when it started...

Thanks again for the tips.

I used the KB download this time, but I suspect it probably did the suggested clean up.
Upon coming back up, my comp was Please Wait with the HD thrashing around.

Once back up, the search for new updates also drove my HD crazy, which was not the case before.

But what do you think was waiting for me instead of the update now button?
That's right, install Windows 10 :D

So I went through the list one by one and I am all fresh updated now

Don't forget to use GWX Control Panel or Never10 (or disable the upgrade via group policy) if you're wanting to avoid Win10.

I just logged into a new Windows 7 vm for testing and wtf, Windows updates took all of 2 minutes to pop up. It's been over a year since that's happened! LOL
