AMD refuses to limit cryptocurrency mining

*Shrug* There is no point. Really doing something about it would require careful design decisions at a level you can't change anymore. Maybe with AMD and nVidia's next line of hardware they could design in hardware level blocks. But otherwise it's useless.

Why would any company limit crypto mining?

Nvidia and their " we will limit hash rates through the bios and driver " all turned out to be bullshit. The bios lock is never going too happen and the hashrate limiter in the drivers has already been removed in the upcoming 470.xx line of drivers. Even still they use the exact same GPU's as the gamers, its not like they have a separate fab for Crypto cores.

In the end Nvidia and AMD and soon Intel will make money, either selling too the bots, crypto miners or at the end of the line the gamers.

Sales a sale.

AMD is already limited in hw due to their use of IF cache vs a larger mem bus.

6700xt is about half the hashrate of the 5700xt. Hopefully should discourage some miners from using it.

At which point you run in to the law of unintended consequences where attempting to 'block' crypto stuff could end up hurting your performance for "legitimate" use cases.

And software blocks are pointless; people will just hack around them, so it's a complete waste of engineering effort.

I actually think Nvidia and AMD do have an incentive to see their cards end up with gamers and not crypto miners because gaming is a sustainable market whereas cryptocurrency mining is not (either prices crash, coins go to proof of stake, or more efficient ASICs come in and supplant GPUs). If high GPU prices turn people away from PC gaming that will negatively impact AMD and Nvidia in the long run.

However, I guess that specifically limiting mining is not that easy to accomplish, which is why they don't even try.

Meh not quite. My 5700xt gets 54.5 MH and most people are getting around 45-47 MH with the 6700xt.

Oh fyi, you can't get a 6700xt either without jumping through the usual hoops. If that is even possible at this point.
