seems its a love/hate releationship with these, you either get lucky and get a set that works out of box, or it has problems (minor to large) :(

but people say the screen quality is up there with the best.

very tempting...

Here are some Customer Reviews for the 30 incher:

Best Buy!, 10/8/2004
Reviewer: Sam, Kitchener, ON
For the price - and given the exclusive features this CRT HDTV gives the owner - you cannot go wrong. Not only does it accept 480p/540p/720p/1080i video formats, but it also accept PAL and SECAM modes which means that you can watch any video from europe or play imported exlusive european video games (for all of us soccer fans that's a huge plus). But this is only the beginning. The sound on this unit is incredible. The stated wattage for the 2 on-board speakers is 7W!? With a little tinking with the bass/treble/loundness features they make the floor vibrate.. and wake up the neighbors. One Con: A little picture distortion at the edges but this is perfectly normal on any CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) based television. Video Quality - 8/10 Audio Quality - 9/10 Features - 10/10 Price - 10/10 Overall - 9/10

Great tv well worth the money!, 10/4/2004
Reviewer: John, Courtenay
I just bought this set 2 weeks ago after researching it online and having already owned a 20 inch flat Advent and being very impressed with it. This is an excellent tv for the price. It accepts all formats up to 1080i and the picture quality is amazing! I also bought an LG Dvi capable dvd player with it and watching my dvds again is a completely new experience. Great combination. Highly recommended.

Great TV, Why pay more?, 8/30/2004
Reviewer: Ed M, Port Moody, BC
I was skeptical about buying this set as I had no clue who Advent was. I did my homework. I went as far as calling the repair depot to get an idea of how reliable this set might be. It turns out the basic chassis has been around for some time and is quite robust. Not only is this thing supposed to be reliable but it is also loaded with features not found in sets costing significantly more. The DVI input is what really got me excited. Sound quality is better than average. I thought the automatic stretch would be very annoying, but it ends up that your eyes do adjust. Now when I watch a regular TV everyone seems to thin. I shopped for a month before buying this set. I know that, unlike a conventional 4:3 set, this one is going to look better as the years pass. I can't wait until all broadcasts are HD widescreen.

good value , 8/17/2004

the advent 30" wide screen is good value for the money.. Pro: good picture after doing a LOT of adjustment. source is biggest factor to its quality - many cable stations are below par. easy setup and adjustment, the service manual (which you can download) helps also .. so does a calibration dvd. manual is very well written really. everything worked out of the box - no surprises. HD DVI input with a samsung hd931 dvd player looks stunning ... so does input from a panasonic rp82 dvd player .. i also inputed HDTV source material from a HD server (i am in the film business) ... it looked pretty good - though i didn't have one of our reference HD monitors right next to it. cons: autobrightness - when the contrast is above 15, the autobrightness kicks in and more often than not kills the picture in dark scenes .. and 15 for contrast is not enough (about 25-30) except for some sources. i need a way to figure out how to fix this .. on board sound quality is not great - but most of the time you would use an external amp / speakers. sound output to external amp is not variable with the volume control - which is bizarre as that is found on most everything .. no memory for each channel setting or input setting. need more than one custom setting .. only 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratio choices (called zoom on the remote for some odd reason - as it doesn't zoom anything) - no other zoom settings , i don't find this really an issue though most of the time... interlaced cable TV can look not great at times - it really depends on the quality of the show and station and your cable provider .. at times it look really great ..

Amazing set!, 8/12/2004
Reviewer: Francois G, Orangeville, Ont
I purchased this set as soon as I saw it. I couldn’t believe a wide-screen 30 inch HDTV CRT could be so inexpensive. I was sure some quality would have to be sacrificed in order for this set to be so affordable. Let me tell you, nothing was sacrificed. This is actually one of the best HDTV’s of its kind available. It does everything sets from the other big names (SONY, PANASONIC…etc) can do at a fraction of the cost. It’s perfect for a progressive scan DVD player and all your video game needs. If you have an Xbox, Gamecube or PS2 get this set! It can handle 480p, 720p and 1080i (note that only the Xbox can handle 720p and 1080i). It also has a DVI input should you want to connect your PC to it with a pure digital connection. There is only one negative thing about this set that should be known. When channel surfing a regular analog signal, basic cable for example, you have to push the zoom button to set the screen to a 4:3 ratio every time you change the channel as it stretches the image to fit the 16:9 of the tube by default. It’s only a minor negative as we’ll all be watching HD broadcasting sooner than later which will make the 4:3 button useless.

id imagine most of this options would be in the secret service menu that all tvs have, its listed how to enter it in this thread to.

So the majorty of problems people have can be solved for this set. Adjust the settings to get the image quality great (people that have other $$$$ hdtvs say its image is just as good once you do so) and then the other issue everyone seems to have is

Sound. the speakers make a loud humming noise everyone notices.

easy way to fix? get a reciver and some speakers and then have them do the sound and turn the tv speakers off.
