View Full Version : Connecting a console to a PC monitor?

I'm using a 19'' Samsung 900 NF and an ATI Radeon 9700 Pro graphics card.
Can I connect a console to the monitor and play just fine? How is the quality of a Gamecube/X-Box when you actually connect it to a high-res screen?

The graphics are great, I have both my gamecube and X-box connected to my widescreen monitor, look at my sig and do a seach on the internet for the adapter I use ( Key Digital Systems ). Its expensive though, I paid $300.00 for it about 2 years ago. But it does all of HDTV resolutions from 480 - 1080.

I really can't spend that much money. So you can't just connect a console to the PC without any hassle? Is there a cheaper alternative? I only have a crappy 30-year old TV that I could use otherwise :(

Any TV capture device with S-Video in will get you decent, 480i level graphics, but to really take advantage of your monitor, a transcoder of some form that can deal with HDTV resolutions would be better. It's truly not worth it to go the vanilla TV capture route if you've got a 30" TV anyways, unless you want an alternate playing screen.
The V-Digi product has gotten rave reviews, both here and in the regular gaming press. Can't think of the other similar products off the top of my head, but the V-Digi was somewhere around $100 US + shipping.

I really can't even afford $100 :(
Is something from this bunch of cards what I'm looking for?

Or is that something else?

I connected my PS2 to my monitor using the Pelican VGA Box, and it looked horrible. My friend connected his PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube through his All-In-Wonder and he said it looked absolutely horrible. The only thing that I have seen that has worked is any of those $100+ devices, anything under that your games will look horrible.

I use my Asus 9800XT with Asus Digital VCR but can only use standard Scart cable to hook it up so it looks rather pap on the monitor but a tad better than on the telly. If i could hook the RGB cable to the 9800Xt however it would look pretty sweet.
Heres a screenshot of NFS:U

With RGB however everything would be much smoother if i knew how to connect it. Does anyone know if there is such a product that allows me to plug a scart into it's female socket and in that female socket run L+R audio plus picture into it?
Heres a quick digram of what i mean:

That's not a VGA cable!
BTW, I've got a knock off of the key digital $300 adapter, only cost me like $70 off www.play-asia.com, don't think they sell it anymore.
http://www.vdigi.com/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=36&Itemid=68
BTW, the v-digi was not $100, it was more like $50. However, you still need to buy the gamecube component cables, which are like another $30.
http://www.vdigi.com/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=36&Itemid=68
And this is the vga cable you would need.(the transcoder might be a better deal though, as it should work for all future systems that support component video, not ps2 since it mostly doesn't support pscan, but xbox, xbox2, ps3, and the revolution, as well as probably the next generation too)
I think you might need this adapter too http://shop1.outpost.com/product/1527757 because I believe the cable plugs directly from the gamecube into the monitor, this adapter will allow you to plug into your existing vga cable.
You'll also need I believe an audio y adapter or something to hook the sound up to computer speakers......or just hook them up to your tv or existing audio system without it.

You need a TRUE VGA connection that's PROGRESSIVE. Thing
is, a lot of those boxes (eg: Red Ant, Pelican, etc) are just
a composite signal. Also using displaying via a composite
or S-VGA input on a videocard sucks too. it HAS to be a
true VGA.

Here is one that works for the Xbox: http://www.xboxvga.com/

Analog VGA output via high-density 15-pin D-Sub connector
Analog line-level L&R audio outputs via RCA jacks
Optical digital 5.1 audio output

Ah, that one is for xbox only though. In that case, I'd recommend the vdigi adapter, it comes with xbox component cables, so all he'd need to do is buy some gamecube ones and he could play both systems on the monitor.

I appreciate your guys' help. However, the VDigi VD-Z3 adapter is no longer available, the Key Digital one is too expensive ($300) and TV-Out-Cards as well as VGA cables just don't seem to provide very good picture quality. Also, I really want something for my Gamecube.
I've would've bought the VD-Z3 on the fly. Now it's gone, lucky me :( Is there anything else I could try? Can you buy decent quality/sound TVs of at least 19' for an acceptable price? Any you recommend in particular?

Decent quality and sound yes, not sure about HDTV. EDTV is possible.

Here's an adapter, it's a deinterlacer though, not pscan.

Bit cheaper version of the keydigital stuff.
http://www.audioauthority.com/aacconsumers/9a62detc.html
$189 for a transcoder.
http://www.envynews.com/index.php?ID=411&page=
Key Digital Xblaster, $199
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=71585&item=5702104203&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW
Ebay, Xblaster, pretty cheap, but used.
You could also get the gamecube's vga cable, and an xbox vga box.
http://www.aheadgames.com/cart/customer/product.php?productid=16198&cat=250&page=1&topcat=250&XCARTSESSID=4abf978bdfd3ed4e757d65b0eb38ce91
Gamecube vga cable.....
and you'll have to find the xbox vga box on your own, I'm not sure which ones are crap and which ones are good.
