Anyone know how to fix the "Unhandled Exception Error in d3d8.dll error" in this game
I have dx8.1 installed and have no other probs running any other games.
Also i found that this game will not work with the new dx9 rco and drivers when i had it installed, i subsequently reformatted back to have 8.1. anyone know why this is? will 8.1 games not work with dx9?

i dunno if this is the same thing, but with tribes 2, if you had a lot of spyware on your computer (i.e.: from kazaa) it would give unhandled exception errors but refer to a memory address instead of that d3d8.dll file. you can use adaware to rid your system of spyware and see if that helps. you can download it here:

thanks for the try but that didnt work. i tried activision and they gave me some BS answer like change desktop res to 800x600 and get latest drivers and turn sound acceleration down to basic. i did all that and it didnt work, all my other games work fine, spearhead runs smooth as silk with all options maxed @ 1152X1024. These workaround solutions get me upset cause you shouldnt have to go turning down resolutions to get a game to work they should address it with a patch.

The only way that I can ge the game to play on my system is to reduce my desktop resolution to 800x600x16. I am not sure what the problem is, but here is the error that I am getting. It looks like to me a DX issues:

Strange I've been playing SFC 3 on my system with Cats 4 and it's fine here.
What I could think of is well try Cat 4 if that doens'twork run it in compatibility mode with Visual Themes disabled (win2000, or ME).
I know that patch is on the horizon since there is a cheat out there that people are using one of them allows you to have 90% accurate torpedos and Phaserz even from the edge of the map, the other allows you to track a cloacked ship as long as you selected the ship before it clocked. I know one thing so far though, is that you can't edit the shiploadout as easy as you could in SFC 2 or SFC 1, the prestige cheat still works though.
The coolest thing is the borg Cube, boy you can ram the sucker into a starbase thus destroying the starbase and the cube will still be intact (Adjunct 10 by 17 has suffered reduced efficiency). :) It's a cool game but the damage mapping is less then in Bridge Commander...now that was sweet. :)
Cheers.

I am new to the ATI family, so I am not sure how to do what you have suggested. Please help me out on this, thanks!

Right click on the .exe of the program and select propoerties -> compatibility
"Run this prog in comp mode for" (Select win2k or win98)
select:
Disable Visual themes and Advanced Text managment (or something like that...the second options is added in SP1).
Sometimes it might or might not work.
Also try disabling the sound card and see if that might help.

Now I feel like a ninny <sp?> , I knew about Win Compat mode, I thought that you were referring to something within the ATI world.
Anyways, running sfc3.exe in win2k with no visuals has fixed my problem.
Thanks for your input and advise.
