Red Orchestra 2: GOTY Editon Performance Review

Nine months ago, World War II-themed multiplayer shooter Red Orchestra 2 launched, and with a long list of PC-centric features aimed at the hardcore audience. The big problem, however, was performance. Critical to doing well in and enjoying a multiplayer FPS, it seemed everyone was reporting low framerates and plenty of stuttering, which brought the experience way down. On the same setup detailed below, I was seeing 35-40fps with frequent stuttering at the time, and found it virtually impossible to get into, particularly with Battlefield: Bad Company 2 running perfectly smooth right alongside it.

Developer Tripwire improved the situation over time, fixing many other issues and improved many features in the months since, though at least for some, performance was still never where it needed to be. It seems around January the team decided to buckle up and work on a massive overhaul to the game, which was recently released in the form of Red Orchestra: GOTY Edition. Besides a performance overhaul, there are also three new maps, new game types Action and Classic, and improvements and tweaks to what looks like every single aspect of the game.

Today I'll be focusing on the key issue (performance), and seeing whether or not the improvements are substantial enough to be worth your time.

Benchmark

For this testing I've run through the Apartments map on each different graphics preset. In each five-minute run, ping was low and 64 players were in game. From general playtime, it does seem performance is consistent across each map.

Screenshot comparison

As you can see, Red Orchestra 2 scales extremely well across the different settings, and that performance is now (finally) appropriately high and consistent. What you can't see is that stuttering is now rare and of little concern.

Conclusion

For now at least, servers are plentiful and player count is high, even after the recent free weekend. So, it seems the game is finally back on its legs. At this point it's well worth it to take the plunge if you haven't, and to stick with it if you have. Just mind that brutal difficulty curve.
