IL-2 Sturmovik Battle of Stalingrad PC Technical Review

Introduction, setup, requirements

One of the most highly regarded series in the small but beloved flight sim genre, IL-2 Sturmovik started in 2001 with developer 1C:Maddox Games and and IL-2 Sturmovik. This was followed up by a series of expansions that eventually culminated in the package release IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946, which, like the initial release, was lauded by fans and critics.

For whatever reason, Maddox Games' later release Cliffs of Dover suffered a rocky development and launch from which it never fully financially recovered (I hear the game is in great shape, now, though), and so new team 1C Game Studios (which brought a few members of the old team over) and Rise of Flight developer 777 Studios were put to work on a new franchise entry dubbed IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Stalingrad, which released recently.

I'm the farthest thing from an expert on flight sims, but my instincts about great work are usually spot on, and from what I can tell, Stalingrad is a true labor of love from two very talented and meticulous developers. If you love the genre and the complexity it brings, I encourage you to check it out.

If you're curious on how the games fares in terms of PC features and performance, read on for a light technical analysis.
