Default 4870 X2 crashing

I have the setup listed in my signature. I am running 2 4870 X2's in quadfire. It has gotten to the point that if I run any game that goes into full screen mode my system will freeze up requiring a hard reboot. These can be games as graphically intensive as CoDMW 2 or simple popcap games. This didn't used to happen. I have tested the ram and cpu. The vga cards are not oc'd. I have a manual fan profile that sets the fan to 100% and the temps never go above 68C. I have a feeling one of the cards is going out on me. Is there an easy way to determine which card is the coulprit withouht taking them out one at a time? I an running Windows 7 Home Premium x64 with the latest catalyst drivers(9.11).

what's hard about taking them out? are you able to disable a pci-e port from the mobo bios?

did this suddenly happen or slowly over time?

you could lower the OC (lower the x48's speed) & check again (even though you're stable on load, the idle period or the transition between idle & load can have a problem (i've experienced this, so has anandtech, in our case was the loadline calibration feature of the mobo))

The actual removal of them is hard. But since I have been moving just getting stuff out of the way to get my system opened is a pain. I don't know if my bios will let me disable one of the ports but that is a good idea. To be honest, I hadn't gamed for a couple of months. When I last gamed, all was well. I just started gaming again and I had this issue.

After doing some more digging around I found in the windows performance an entry saying that my visual settings need to change to improve performance. When I clicked on the details it opened up the event viewer and this is the message I am getting

The Desktop Window Manager is experiencing heavy resource contention.
Scenario : The Desktop Window Manager responsiveness has degraded.

The event data says:
EventData

DisplayDeviceFriendlyNameLength 22
DisplayDeviceFriendlyName ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2
MemoryBandwidth 24134000
MemorySize 4013117440
Scenario 3

I have also noticed that the video buffer doesn't clear. Is this normal? For example, if I launch a full screen app such as half life 2 and then exit out before it crashes and then launch another full screen app a little later such as another game, I see the last screen displayed from the first app. It only shows for a second or 2.

Actually I had the problem of buffer not clearing when I had 2900 crossfire but not with 4870 crossfire.. exactly as you said, when I started a game the last image from the previouse game would appear as I loaded the next game..
