Default Company of Heroes Fog of war glitch

I've have this rather strange glitch where the fog of war is no where near as smooth as it should be. It's been like that since the multiplayer beta and is starting to really annoy me in what otherwise would be a graphically flawless game imo. Strange thing is it will look perfectly fine until I spot an enemy (no matter how soon or how late in the game). It also doesn't come up if I set shaders on low but it's a waste of an X1900XT I think. Catalyst settings and driver versions make no difference.

Here's a screenshot of the glitch.

http://img141.imagevenue.com/img.php..._122_452lo.jpg

Just wondering if anyone else has such a problem, as I have not seen it mentioned anywhere else.

this seems to be a problem with all x1 family of cards. not a game-ender, more of a nuisance. I run coh maxed settings, and I get blocky fow too. with the amt of micro managing I do, I dont really notice. I believe on the relic forums, there is an ongoing thread in which a lucky few dont have this problem(using 6.12s beta). check it out.

I actually had the same issue in Diablo 2 recently. My brother started playing it again on my notebook so I decided to roll a character on my desktop. The game appeared very dark and when I ran up the map I would get the dark blocky areas exactly like you see in your pic. I downloaded 6.12 Beta 2 since I wanted to fool around with EATM. Now the issue is gone and it works properly now. You may want to give 6.12 Beta 2 a try.

I'm using the 6.10s and a X1900 XTX and the FoW looks the same as it does on the 8800 GTX I have running along side. The blocks are blurred on both systems.

Yep I've got it too.

Only got it today and before installing I uninstalled the 6.10's and installed the 6.12's (used the usual routine).

Everything in game is maxed including AA and I get the same rolling FOW glitch. Never experienced this in the demo.

Presumably this is a game glirtch that might get fixed with new patches.

Cheers

Lordhawk, I wouldnt bank on that being fixed in a coh update. me thinks they want you to buy a nvidia card.also noticed even w/ shadows on high, they are a bit blocky...browsing coh screenshot threads, I can almost tell what brand of video card they use....

Default same

Got the same issue with my X1950XTX using Cat 6.12 and 6.11 drivers. Pretty sure I didn't have the issue with my X1800XT I got rid of two weeks ago but don't really remember.

Something is wrong, i have everything maxed at 1680x1050 and it runs I'd say average 30 fps which is acceptable for this game. Click my specs.

Using the Catalyst 6.12 WHQLs released yesterday on a X1900 XTX, is this not how it's supposed to look (it looks like this on the 8800 GTX too)?

Ratchet, no that is not how it is supposed to look. it should be smoother. note: take a look at the fow after a skirmish erupts. it becomes very blocky. just send some engineers to attack the AI engineers and watch it change. weird. as to the the 1900xt user getting 9 FPS, something is serirously wrong. I run a 1900gt, amd 64x2 3800, 2 g ram and I get from 35-40fps with all maxed settings(even shadows).

You're right, it's only smooth until you meet an enemy. That's a weird bug for sure.

TBH I don't know what FPS I get but all I know is that it runs butter smooth with 6xAA & 16xAF at 12x10 everything maxed even in skirmish mode with loads going on. I've experienced no jitters or stuttering so far.

This FOW glitch is more a nuisance than a ball breaker so I will persevere for the time being. BTW I'm patched to 1.4 so Alpha&Omega you might be right after all!

Thanks for the replies. I know it's not all that bad, I was worried something might have been wrong with my hardware. I used to get serious artifacts in 3dMark06 and Oblivion, though everything seems fine now... I don't really read Relic's forums, thought it would be mentioned here.

Oh well, I've moved on to Medieval II anyway.

PS. I noticed that running ATITrayTools with COH makes it stutter a lot. So if you're having low fps/stuttering, try closing it first.

Well i ocd my rig to 2700 mhz and now its about 19-25 fps in a 8er skirmish
with 7 hard CPUs on that big map top vs bottom... and theres TONS
of units with the computer cheaters

And my frame counter is accurate ..its the ASUS enhanced OSD frame counter.

Tscha seems im really bottlenecked by CPU ..you better dont dare to change
the viewing angle to something more flat that lets you view far distance...
thats a real killer

well, played several games this weekend. no change with the 6.12s . still blocky and annoying. maybe ATI would be kind enough to address this?

I to experience the 'blocky' fog of war.

Have to say though it doesnt really bother me, but not everyone is hardcore like me.

AMD

Ya I meantioned this FoW thing in a thread long ago concearning a short list of games with minor issues on ATI cards.

I only noticed cause I played CoH on a 7800GT and then on my X1900XT. Noticed it right away. But I can certainly still play regardless.

Another little "bug" with ATI and COH versus nVidia is the Ultra Setting crash to desktop.

NO this has NOTHING to do with 256MB mkay?

My 256MB 7800GT plays FULL ULTRA settings with zero issues other than slow framerates. On my X1900XT 256MB I end up at the desktop as soon as graphics try to load. Be it a mission or the benchmark.

I am perfectly fine on the next setting down and average in the 30's and 40's no problemo!

I think the thing is that this is an nVidia game of the highest order. That's the feeling I get from it when I play it on the 2 cards.

C.

We have a very similar system, ill do some FPS tests when I get back later on...

EDIT:

Here are two shots showing the highest frame rate and lowest I generally get.

In case you cant read it, the low was about 20 - 21fps, with a high of around 78-82fps.

This is with most detail settings on high or ultra. 4XAF 2XAA

I think the fog of war glitch has been fixed with Company of Heroes v 1.5.

Well, I just got the game and I'm not seeing anything like in the screen shots above. Running Cats 7.2 XP on X1950XTX on 1.5 version.
