Question When will there be ATI drivers for FreeBSD?

Hello,

I have a older ATI Radeon 9600XT and have been using Ubuntu Linux for some time. The FGLRX proprietary drivers work great but I've been thinking about trying PC-BSD and DesktopBSD (based on FreeBSD), but unfortuantly there doesnt seem to be any drivers. They have basic open-source drivers but there isn't any hardware acceleration whatsoever.

So my question is when might there be native FreeBSD drivers for at least the x86-32 and x86-64 processor platforms? Where might I go to request this?

Thanks,
Vincent

My guess would be - never or at least not in the near future.

BSD is not a platform large enough to warrant seperate team to write drivers to.. just look how long it took before Linux was able to garner even some support.

Looking at the site, it looks like the kernel is the only piece that is missing. The binary kernel module component is operating system neutral. I am unaware if the BSD kernel can handle Linux binaries.

Beyond that, support for the FreeBSD kernel can be in theory b created by porting firegl_public.c to the BSD APIs.

Regars,

Matthew

If it's compiled with compat_linux then it would, for the most part.

well it seems that you will be best served with DRI, it seems to run in FREEBSD.
At least you'll have 3D and the 2D performance, at least in Linux, is far better than the fglrx.
