The CDC believes that most if not all the flu out there right now is H1N1. What tends to happen is when one new flu subtype appears and is highly virulent, it more or less drowns out other flu subtypes. Basically a shift occurs in the distribution of flu subtypes and it can happen relatively quickly (and last until a new strain comes in).

It mostly has to do with immunity. After a particular subtype has been around for a while, more immunity is built up, leaving it open for a new subtype to come in that people aren't immune to.

That's why H1N1 isn't as big a threat in the elderly as it is in younger people. The pandemic flu of 1918 was still in circulation in the population until ~1950. Also, antibodies to the 1918 pandemic flu are cross reactive with H1N1. Thus, if you were born before 1950, there is a larger chance that you have had contact with that variant and have some immunity. Current statistics demonstrate, that due to its decline in prevalence, only ~4% of persons born after 1980 have immunity. That's why its bad. We're experience a shift and the younger population is at the greatest risk.

Yeah, I started feeling sick on Tuesday night. Since then I have been running a 102F fever which just broke this morning (thankfully). Yesterday is pretty much a blur as I spent most of it sleeping.

My co-worker told me that she contracted the swine flu last week. She was sick as a dog for half a week or so.

Yeah, I posted that, not curio.

As it happens, not, I haven't gotten the H1N1 shot. My co-worker normally works at offices many miles from my building. She visits occasionally, but I haven't seen her since she was out with the flu.

I got the non-H1N1 shot a week ago. The swine-flu vaccine is in short supply, and I'm neither at-risk, nor do I have have a job that's likely to put others at risk. If the opportunity presents itself, I'll get the H1N1 shot, but in the meantime, I'm getting my kids vaccinated. They need it more than I do.

ive been fighting off a bad cold (as have a few others in my family) might be the flu might not be, none of us bothered to go to the doc as well it's a flu, they can't do anything. (fluids rest blah blah blah)

plugged nose, sore thoart, Headaches, bodyaches and a fever that lasted 3 days. Right now im just having body aches and the headache the rest is gone.

thing is I never felt like I was going to BE sick like I have with every other flu in the past, I just felt like I could die (lol) and ive never had a cold with a fever before...

Well, I think the fever has now subsided. I don't feel much better though (totally weak, aches and pains pretty much everywhere. Lungs feel heavy and make phlegmy sound when I breathe). I pretty much feel like the walking dead.

This has got to be the single worst experience illness wise that I have ever gone through, except maybe the time I had severe food poisoning.
