Nightmare. This may just be a massive unhappy coincidence but I just temporarrily removed the HDMI cable from my HTPC to plug in a laptop for testing. Then plugged the cable back in and had my normal HTPC display back. Moments later the display went black and a little later I could smell that horrible hot/burning electronics smell. Turned PC off at wall but no joy on restart. 3 red lights on the back of the 4870. Left it off for 4 mins, same issue. Will try the motherboard integrated graphics to make sure everything else workign ok but seems odd it all happened at the same time as unplugging the HDMI whilst the machine was running (almost as if the fans had completely stopped). Anyone else seen this happen or is it just a failure that could have happened at any time? Was folding for rage3d at the time! Card wasn't overclocked, and CPU is water cooled so don't think ambient temp was an issue. Drivers are .11 Cheers Alex Sans 4870

Removed the 4870 and tried booting off my 780G integrated graphics but still nothing so now complete nightmare. No obvious blown capacitors on the mobo, CPU looks ok (though obviously can't tell much due to heat spreader). Only thing that may be a clue is that the underside of the mobo looks very slightly discoloured underneath the main bank of capacitors behind the CPU. Guess my Phenom 2.5 Black may have been too much for the poor old 780G. Just hope the 4870 is ok!

Thanks for that. Replacement 780G board arriving on Thursday so will at least find out if CPU is OK. Will then try the 4870 as per the above (fingers crossed!). My Gigabyte was a Rev 1.0 GA-MA78GM-S2H which doesn't officially support the 9850 and I did have it mildly overclocked to 2.8 so really hoping that was the issue! Cheers
