Default 4800-series: Flashing dots in DX10 games?

This issue was discussed in the Tech Support forum: http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?t=33926536

One poster even RMA'ed his card because it looks almost exactly like faulty video RAM.. But the replacement card produced the same artifacts. It appears to be a driver issue. So I thought it would be a good idea to mention it here, too.

Basically, you get white flashing dots on some surfaces in DX10 games/demos like Crysis and the AMD Ping-Pong DX10 demo.. They look almost exactly like the white dots in one of the screenshots at http://www.playtool.com/pages/artifacts/artifacts.html.

It's not terribly annoying, but because it produces the same kind of artifacts that faulty VRAM would, I think it's important to fix it.

Here's a screenshot from the Ping Pong demo (There's a Crysis shot in the other thread):

yes, sometimes I saw it in Crysis DX10.

this remind me on edge white dots with any X800 to x1k cards in 3Dmark 2003 shader tests (elephants) it turned out to be driver issue and ATI fixed it over time ...

ATI Technologies

This is the first driver issue I've had with my 4850. My last card was a 8800GT.

It will be interesting to see how quickly ATI responds to and fixes the issue..a good way to meassure how their drivers and support compare to Nvidia

It is not HD4-series specific. I have the same dots in AssassinsCreed in DX10 mode with my HD2900XT, and HardOCP review site saw the same with a HD3870X2 so i think its all DX10 cards that suffer from this bug.

I can confirm that. I can see those white dots in Crysis DX10 on my CF 3870 rig, too.

Funnily the white dots are limited to one building in the level Relic. It's the main building in the village with the NK command post. Entering the building via rear door and looking at the green wall ahead I can see flashing white dots. It looks like the wall is porous and the bright sunlight is shining through small holes.

i have the same issue on my radeon 3870. dont' which driver had this first but i think the dots are there for the last 2 or 3 catalyst releases.

I use vista x64, gigabyte 965p-ds3, latest dx version, cat 8.6 4800 hotfix driver.

funny is, almost everything is error free... also the ruby whiteout demo... only the ping-pong demo has this silly error

I was told yesterday by a beta tester here that the driver team was aware of the issue and are working on it.

Hope it get's handled ASAP.

Hi.

Got some response on this. The Ping-pong demo is a known driver issue that will get fixed at some point. The Crysis white dots is something different, that probably should be fixed on the game side, but we'll see (we are working on something; this does happen in a few other apps and is linked to some bad math on the app side).

Well, considering Crysis is essentially abandoned by the developer and publisher, it seems unlikely that fix will arrive from them.

ummm.
i thought the ping pong balls ALLL had a lil dot of light on them deliberatly...
i thought it was adding more light sources with each ball.
reading here though it seems like it isnt.

crysis and assassins creed i thought were driver issues though,
Seems i had it backwards.

Yup, no more patches for Crysis.

Lets hope that Warhead won't have these flashing dots.

same problem here, with ati 3850.white dots with catalyst 8.5,8.6 and hotfix 8.6.
ping pong demo run perfect with older driver 8.4,maybe you can try this driver and see if this problem persist.

Almost certainly will not be a patch 1.3 delivered for Crysis
Crysis Monthly Update #1, the first official status report from Crytek to the world-wide community, is reporting that no more updates will be available for Crysis and the development of the dedicated Linux server is now on hold. In related news, inCrysis has word that Crytek has trademarked the name Crysis Warzone, now owning all of the following trademarks: Crysis Wars, Crysis Warhead, Crysis Warzone, and World in Crysis. Thanks: Blues.

Ya. Have to play in DX9 mode if you are in Vista. In XP no such problem.

what about trying different AA and resolution methods? Pain in the ass, I know, though, if XP is not displaying these "dots" then, could very well be driver/OS specific..

Well considering only games in DX10-mode are getting these dots, there is no reason to even discuss people with XP-systems as they cant even run games in DX10 mode

I did not notice anything in Gears of War DX10-mode either. Neither did (as far as i can tell) DevilMayCry4 have any dots in DX10-mode.

Just Crysis DX10, AssassinsCreed DX10 for me, and apperantly the pingping-demo.

It depends on how a game handles shadow filtering, AFAIR.

Can you not run games in dx9 mode on vista?

Of course you can, some use diffrent .exes depending on weather you want DX9 or DX10, others needs flags such as "-DX9" to be used in target line in a shortcut for the game.

The issue, however, is that when you run some of these games in DX10, shadows have these wierd flashing dots.

Please, ATI, do something about this issue. With my CF 4870 rig the flashing white dots in Crysis DX10 are getting pretty annoying. Now they are visible in all buildings!!!

@all

Please don't give me the advice to play Crysis in DX9. The image quality of Crysis DX10 is way better than the image quality of Crysis DX9. Now that I can play Crysis smoothly with settings on VeryHigh plus 4xAA I want to play Crysis with the best image quality.

I am getting fu**ing pissed off. When new radeon came out i decided to change my old computer. Now i can play almost all game on full details on my new Radeon 4870.
When i wanted to play a best graphic game so far(Crysis) i saw those white dosts.
Fast to google and found this topic(and forum). And i'm really angry right now becausei can`t have a satisfaction in play when those errors appear.
Someone said it's only in crysis and it`s a fault of game , not drivers.
But i found this revieve
http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/articl...50aHVzaWFzdA==

It's also in assassin creed. Also if you look closer there are black dots!.
Somewhere i saw also them in crysis!

And now to conclusion. I hope it will be fixed in 8.7 drivers.Even if not,it can be done in 8.8 .I can wait. But please, tell me first if this can be solved or not. If not , will ati give me my money back if i return this card to a store where i bought it.Will store comply with my request. Because i don't want to see those dots in upcoming titles(Fallout 3,Far cry 2 etc.).On nvidia geforce there aren't any dots.

PS:Sorry for my english , im not using it daily.

Did you not read the thread?

ATI Beta testers here have indicated that ATI is aware of the issue (which is only in Crysis in DX10 mode) and are working on a solution.
