Default 3D games: greater than 1600x1200 resolutions locked at 60 Hz

I am more than frustrated now and I can only imagine that ATi driver engineers have never tried running at resolutions greater than 1600x1200.

How the heck do I force refresh rates greater than 60 Hz at resolutions greater than 1600x1200 in 3D games on a Radeon X800 XL with 5.6?

I've tried:
-CCC and standard control panel refresh "override".
-Rivatuner.
-ReForce.
-Various third party ATi tray tools.
-Forcing the refresh rate through the game.
-Forcing the refresh rate through dxdiag.
-Ticking and unticking "hide modes this monitor cannot support"
-DDC on and off with all of the above combinations.

This is a standard 19" Sony G420 CRT with a standard VGA connection which previous nVidia cards had no problems with forcing refresh rates.

Reforce has never failed me. When you 1st install the drivers, and run Reforce for the 1st time you should see Auto Populate. Click that, then scroll down and make sure all of the refresh rates are correct for the resolutions you are going to be running. If they are not, click on the refresh rate for a certain resolution and change it to the appropriate #, and apply. Change your resolution and use your monitor controls to make sure it's running in the correct refresh rate. Sorry if i'm suggesting things you have already tried.

Yup, tried that too. If I turn off DDC the driver tries to force a value outside of the scan range (who knows where it got it from because I certainly never put it into ReForce). If I turn it on it pretends to change resolution but it's really still stuck at 1600x1200.

Can you confirm >1600x1200 resolutions are working for you with forced refresh rates?

Your 19 monitor can go over 1600x1200? Impressive.

I tried that utility and it's rubbish. The drop-down doesn't allow anything between 60 and 75 and when I try a non-standard resolution it does nothing (i.e it stays at 60 Hz).

5 years since Windows 2000 came out and ATi still haven't been able to produce a 60 Hz refresh fix like nVidia offers with their drivers.

What is the force button supposed to do in the drivers? Why does it jump to 800x600 when I try to force a refresh rate at 1920x1440?

This is beyond ridiculous now. I've now tried to edit the modes directly in the display INF and I even made my own monitor driver and still it doesn't work.

The driver continues to pull refresh rates and resolutions from who knows which orifice and uses them instead of what I tell it. The result is always the wrong resolution and/or the wrong refresh rate at any resolution greater than 1600x1200.

I'm seriously tempted to return this card and go back to nVidia.

Spyre, do you have any suggestions? Can you ask the ATi engineers for some advice?

Just becarful. Some of the programs that force refresh rates can crash, or make some games no load. For instance, ReForce will make my Half Life 2 not load at all.

Wink

I had that problem in the past.

Solved it with ATI Tray Tools.

Good luck

you can make it work with hl2 by going to dxdiag>more help>override refreshrate, enter your refreshrate and start hl2.
